Recommendation<\/p>\n

Last week two students who are graduating this year came to see me separately and asked for a letter of recommendation. They did not know that they both had interviewed with the same software company. Although their interviews went well but there is only one position opening and the hiring manager was one of my former students. He was glad that both applicants were also my students so he asked them to get a recommendation from me. That put me in a difficult situation because I knew he will make decision based on my recommendation.<\/p>\n

Bob was one of the best students in my class and got top score on all exams. He was the student who often came to class early and ready to learn. However he never asked questions in class or seek help outside of class. He was an independent student who knew what he wanted, put a lot of efforts in learning and focus on his own study. He got along well with others on his team and his team\u2019s project completed with the highest score.<\/p>\n

Jane was also a good student although she was not the best. She attended every class and took notes carefully. She was very active in class discussion; she always asked questions on what she did not understand well. Her questions were thoughtful as they reflected her understanding of the course material. She also seeks helps and often came to my office for additional information. Although she was not the leader of the team but she worked hard with her team to complete the team\u2019s project.<\/p>\n

Who do you think I should recommend? The best student or the good student?<\/p>\n

After a lot of considerations, I recommended Jane; even she did not have the highest grade in class. I think she will do well in the workplace with her collaboration skills and active learning. I am sure many of you may not agree with me but there are more things on a professor\u2019s minds than just good grade when recommend someone for a position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
