Study for a Master’s Degree<\/p>\n

A mother wrote to me: \u201cMy son will graduate with a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science this year. I want him continue to the Master\u2019s degree and maybe Doctorate degree (PhD) in the U.S. My questions are: How long does it take to finish a Master program? What type of job could he get with a MS degree? How much could he make, if he works in the U.S.?<\/p>\n

Answer: Typically, Master’s degree in the U.S. is designed to be completed in two years. Some students may work hard and could finish in one and a half year. There are universities that claim they have programs that allow students to complete in one year or less. Quality training cannot be shortening unless students only want a degree and not the knowledge. (Please read my blog on Bogus school and for-profit school).<\/p>\n

Basically, there are two types of master’s degree: A \u201cProfessional Master\u2019s degree\u201d that trains students to specialize in a technical area; and \u201cResearch Master\u2019s degree\u201d that focus on research and allows students to continue into the doctorate program (PhD). Students must make decision to enroll which program (Research, or Professional) depending on their educational goals.<\/p>\n

Professional Master’s Degrees: This type of degree is designed to allow students to build advanced knowledge and skills in particular area. The training often last about two years and focuses on emerging or interdisciplinary area. Students must complete a number of required credits and a capstone project. Most professional master\u2019s degrees are developed based on the need of the industry or emerging technologies. For example, the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) or Master of Computer Science in Security, Master of Information System Management in Big Data analytics. Etc. Depend on the industry needs, if students select the right Professional Master\u2019s degree, they could get very good salary and benefits. For example a MS degree in Big Data or security could make $100,000 to $130,000 a year (2013 data)<\/p>\n

Research Master’s Degrees: This type of degree is focusing on applied research fields so students must know in advance what area that they want to work on. After getting accepted, student often works with a professor to conduct research. To complete the program, students must write a thesis and pass a comprehensive examination set by the graduate faculty. The research master’s degree is designed for students who want to continue into the PhD program. It is difficult to find job with a MS in research, there are few jobs in this area as most research jobs require a PhD degree. (Please see my blog on PhD degree)<\/p>\n

Your son should do research to find the right university to enroll. Make sure he knows what he want and in addition, always apply to several universities since admission is very competitive.
