A first year student wrote to me: \u201cMy parents want me to go to college to get an education but if I get married, they prefer that I stay home and raising children. I do not want to argue with my parents but I think it would be a waste of my education as I want to have a career. I am currently study Information System Management (ISM) where most students are men and they told me that it is difficult for a woman to be an IT manager. What do you think? Please give advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today women can do many things that previous generations may not even think of. In this highly competitive world, it would be very difficult to have a good family life with only one income. In most developed countries, it takes two incomes to live comfortable, which means both husband and wife must work. Today women have many choices, including having both a career and a family life. However, you do not have to make decision at this time, as first year student your priority should be focusing on your education to develop a good career. What ever happen in the future will depend on many factors that you and your future husband will have to make together. It is too early to even think about it.<\/p>\n

Regarding your decision to study Information System Management (ISM), I think it is an excellent choice. Do not let others tell you that it is difficult; they do not know what they are talking about. Remember that it is good to try things that never been done before. Even if you fail, try and try again until you succeed. Failure is recoverable but regret is much harder. You may ask yourself: \u201cWhat can I do? NOT what I cannot do.\u201d That will give you some information about who you really are, and that can help you to overcome some \u201cold fashion\u201d obstacles. Given the fact that currently about half of top people in information technology industry are women (Marissa Meyer CEO at Yahoo,\u00a0 Sheryl Sandberg COO at Facebook, Meg Whitman CEO of HP, Julie Larson Green CFO of Microsoft, and Lisa Brummel Vice president of Microsoft etc.) I think women should do a more to find out what they can and prove that some of the biases against them are completely wrong.<\/p>\n

Today technology industry are full of competent women, many have risen to high level managers and company owners. Technology is no longer just a place for men but for anyone who are capable and being professional. This is a different world when women have choices and they will make the right decision on their career and their family.
