Letter to college students: Being prepared<\/p>\n

Dear college students,<\/p>\n

As college students, you need to know that going to college is only the beginning; having graduated is an achievement, but a degree does not equal success if you cannot find a job related to what you have studied. According to a college study in 2012, only 38% of graduates were able to get job related to their fields of study which means 62% of graduates did not find job or get job related to what they have studied. Among graduates that get good jobs, 86% of them were in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); and among graduates who could not find job, 74% of them were in other fields such as arts, drama, music, philosophy, social science, psychology, literature and history. Based on these data, it is important that you to select your fields of study carefully and establish good study habits to ensure that you will achieve your education goals.<\/p>\n

As college students, you need to understand that going to college is not the same as high school, and getting a degree is not the same as finding a good job. The degree should NEVER be your goal as it does not guarantee anything. Your goals should be on being educated with the right knowledge and skills and being a responsible person for yourself, for your family, and for your society. Have you ever asked: \u201cWhat makes some college students successful, while others fail?\u201d It is not about how smart they are or how lucky they are but how PREPARED they are when they go to college. Although you did well in high school but it does not mean you will do well in college, if you are NOT prepared.<\/p>\n

Being prepared means you have a good reason to go to college. You know what it is and why. The reason should NOT be because your parents told you to go to college. The reason should NOT be because your best friends are going to college. The reason should NOT be because it is the next thing after high school. The reason should be your own idea about your future as you want to be educated, to build a good career so you can be productive, independent, and contribute to your society.<\/p>\n

Being prepared means you know how to set your priorities. You go to college to learn so go to class must be a top priority, which means you will NOT skip class for whatever reason. To be a responsible person means you must set your own time to study, to do homework, and to set limit to other social activities. Responsible students know how to manage their time based on their priorities. There is nothing wrong with going to a party over the weekend, or getting to know someone who is special, as long as you have done what you plan to do base on your own priorities. There are only 7 days in the week and you only have four years to complete your education but you have the whole life for other activities so setting priorities must be the first thing you learn when go to college.<\/p>\n

Being prepared means you must study steadily each day. You must read all assigned tasks; for every hour in class, you must spend at least two hours of study on your own. You cannot scram at the last minutes for tests but study every day, NOT all night before the test. You must take good class notes by listening carefully to what professors teach in class, and NOT pay attention to what your friends send you via text messages. You must work efficiently because you do NOT have time to listen to the lecture a second time.<\/p>\n

Being prepared means you must learn as much as you can. When you read something, you must think about what it means, NOT just skim through it. When you do not understand something, you should ask question in class so professors can help you to understand it better. When you write papers or work on homework, you should think deeply on the issue and check references to broaden your knowledge. Of course, sometimes things may not happen as you wish but you must never give up. You must know that tests are learning opportunities to check your knowledge. So instead of looking at the grade, you must look at how much you have learned and how much you know so you can do better the next time.<\/p>\n

Being prepared means you know when you can learn by yourself and when you will need help. No one can do everything so sometime you need to ask professors to help. You learn to respect your professors, not because of their knowledge but because their dedication to educate students like you. They are not someone who just transfer the academic knowledge but also ones who will guide you in many things. You need to talk to them about things that you do not understand, including careers, jobs, and how to set goals, including your goals in life. You do not go to college just to get degree, or to get a job, or to make money but also to be a total person, a good person for your family, an useful person for your society, a responsible person for your country, and much more.<\/p>\n

Being prepared means you learn to broaden your knowledge beyond what the school teaches you. You need to read extensively to understand how things work, how technologies are changing, how the economy is growing, how companies are operating, and how the world is evolving etc. You are a part of this world and you must be responsible for it. That is why you must learn to grow up responsibly. The time in college is more than just learning from books but also learning to mature and being a responsible person.<\/p>\n

As college students, you are living in a special sheltered world but in a short time you will face the real world. What you do then will determine your future, your family\u2019s future, and how much you contribute will determine your society\u2019s future and your country\u2019s future because all of you are the future. However the future is being determined here and now as you are being educated in college. You should never forget that your parents have an expectation of you as they scarify everything for you; your professors also have an expectation of you as they dedicate everything to educate you; and your country also has an expectation of you as you will be good citizens who contribute to its future; and after all, the future of the world also depend on people like you and your contribution to humanity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
