Changing job<\/p>\n

A student wrote to me: \u201cI graduated last June and have been working for five months. The job is good but I am not happy about what I do. It is boring and does not have a good future. I am thinking about finding another job. How long should I stay in this job before I could switch to another job? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: If you are not happy with your current job then start looking immediately. If your current job is not what you can build a long term career then there is no reason to stay. If you wait for awhile until your current job is getting worst then you may decide to get out without anything else to support you then it would be a mistake. Never leave a job without something to back you up. However, you must continue to do your current job as well as possible while explore other opportunities. Even it is not easy to find a good job in this recession time, you must use this situation as a lesson so you will be more carefully when looking for the next job.<\/p>\n

Many graduates would take any job offer without knowing much about the job then realize that they do not like it and want to switch to another. Although having a job is better than no job at all, but it would be best if students can select the right field of study that has high demand so by graduation time, they will have many choices to choose and find the right company to build a career that they can enjoy for a long time rather than just take any job available then regret later.<\/p>\n

The common advice: \u201cStudy what you like and do what you love then everything will be fine.\u201d does not always work because most first year college students do not know exactly what they like and not everyone can do what they love regardless of how much income they get. Students must be taught about the reality of the job market as some jobs offer better future, better income than others. Even they find good jobs but there are time they may need to switch job for better career and better future. By knowing what they could do and what is available in the market will help students to make a better decision than just follow their instincts or their friends. In this fast changing time, market always changes and students need to monitor it to seize the best opportunity.<\/p>\n

Students need to know that not everyone will be able to find a career that they are passionate about. They must distinguish between a career and a hobby. A career is something they can make a good living but a hobby is something they enjoy when they have time. For example, singing can be a career as well as a hobby. To sing as a professional requires different career path, lot of trainings but limited career opportunities. As a hobby, anyone can sing whenever they like or at parties with friends.<\/p>\n

There are idealists who never found the perfect jobs where they can make a living on what they love. They spend years after years moving from one job to another, feeling frustrated that they have not found a job that they enjoy. What will happen if they cannot find what they are looking for and still have to depend on someone who supports them? In reality, there may be no perfect job but there are opportunities that they could seize and make a good living.
