Selecting a field of study<\/p>\n

A student wrote: \u201cI will go to college next year but I do not know what field of study to choose? The problem is what I want is not what my parents want and what I like is not what my friends like. I am having difficulty in making decision. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: The common advice that many people would say is: \u201cSelect the field of study that you like and study what you love.\u201d However I would add a reality advice: \u201cAnd make sure that you can make a living with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young people often select the field of study based on many factors but most do NOT pay attention to the job-market realities. They do not know which field is \u201cHot\u201d and has high demand or which area is growing with a lot of potential. They do not look at the salary of what they select to determine whether it is enough to live a comfortable life. Sometime young people try to persuade their friends to study the same field that they choose with them without realize that things will change in college and most friendships in high school do not remain the same in college. You should not let your friends influence you but must rely on your own decision. After all, it is your future and your life, not theirs. Today parents are too busy to research about the job market; many often based their recommendation on their past experience. There is danger in assuming that the past\u2019s job market is the same with today’s job market. It is also danger to believe that today\u2019s job market will be the same four years, six years from now after you have finished your college education.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and several global education organizations have conducted several researches on future jobs and predict what will be in high demand. They compare many fields of study and average salaries being paid in jobs held by graduates with those degrees and concluded that from 2010 to 2020 the highest salary and best jobs are jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Among Science area are Medical, Pharmacy and Nurse. Among technology area are: Information Technology (Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Information System Management) Biotechnology and Nano Technology. Among Engineering area are: Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Material Engineering; and among Math area are: Actuary, Accounting, Statistics and Applied Math.<\/p>\n

According to these reports, Business, Finance, Sale and Marketing fields will remain steady but may not grow fast as few years before the financial crisis. Due to the oversupply of business graduates and a large number of experienced workers returning to work, competition will be fierce between new graduates and experience workers. With less demand and more supply, salary of these fields will not grow much in the next few years.<\/p>\n

By knowing which field of study has high demand and good salary, you can make the right decision to plan a good career for your future. The important is that you make informed decision about your education choices based on the best available information. That includes knowing yourself, understand what you like to do because salary and earnings is important, but so is your emotional fulfillment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
