Unprepared students<\/p>\n

Students who are not ready for college, who come to class without knowing why they are there and what they will do. Some students may have difficulty because their high school education did not prepare them for the hard works in college. Some students may not be \u201cmatured\u201d enough to study independently as most college students must do. Most of these students often feel disconnect between what they are learning and what they will do in the future. Because of this confusion, they never put in the efforts needed to learn anything.<\/p>\n

The best way to help these unprepared students is to spend time explain the relevance of what they are learning in the course and connect that to what they may do in the future. For example teacher may explain that if they do not study data structure well, they cannot program and if they cannot code well, they will not be able to get a job as programmer. It is important that students have a clear picture about what they can do with their knowledge and skills after graduate. One\u00a0technique that I often use is to simulate “real life scenarios” in the classroom by asking students to write a weekly status report to a manager. This assignment replaces the common academic report often given in most colleges. I told students that when they work for a software company, they will have to write status report to their managers so it is better to learn it by actually doing it now. The typical scenarios could be: \u201cYou are working in a software project but the software does not work well and you do not know whether it is the requirements or the design.\u201d Or \u201cYou need at least five more days to test the software but the schedule requires that you complete it today.\u201d Since students see the relevant of what they learn and their future work, most of them do put in extra effort and I have noticed an improvement in the quality of their reports. By reviewing these reports, I can start a class discussion on how to solve problem and how things actually work in the industry. In addition, I do not ask students to write essays but ask them to write a blog article to summarize a technology that they just learn as in the future they may have to describe new technology to their managers. By using practical aspect of learning by doing, students can understand the relevant of what they learn and what they need at work and that can help them in their future career.<\/p>\n

Unprepared students are mostly confused people as they need some guidances and clear direction. By explain to them their career paths, helping them to understand the relationship between what they are learning now and what they can do in the future will keep them motivated and prepared for their career. That is why I often start at the beginning of each course by asking each student to write a short description of what they think they will learn in my course. Based on their writing, I will lead a class discussion on why this course is important to them and what they can do with this knowledge when they work in the industry. By knowing what is relevance to their future, students are willing to learn more. By provide them with career information at the start of the course to set direction then throughout the course, I also remind them of the relevance of what they learn will keep them motivated to learn.<\/p>\n

As a teacher, it is important to note that you are not only teaching a subject but also develop professionals who could contribute to the society. What you can get them to learn in your class will also produce knowledgeable workers for your economy. By putting some extra efforts to help, you can benefit them in all of their courses not just your course, and motivate them to become lifelong learners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
