Answer: Let\u2019s look at the big picture of what is happening in a company. Every company owner needs certain information to make decisions, to identify problems, and to control the operations. Before Information Technology (IT), owner must walk around the company to observe how things operate and takes action when necessary. However owner cannot spend all the time observing so he has to rely on managers to report things to him. Unfortunately not all reports are accurate as managers often hide their mistakes or modify the report to make things look better than they are. Without accurate information, owner cannot make good decision or know about problems until it is too late. By applying information technology to automate business processes and collect data, owner can get accurate information faster, and make decision quickly and effectively.<\/p>\n

Information System Management (ISM) is a computing system that collects and processes data of company operation and generates meaningful information that helps owner and managers to make decision, solve problems and control company operation efficiently. Today most information systems collect and process data from many sources such as business transactions, company operation, and other external relevant data from market places, public information, competitors, and analyze them to create special business intelligence reports for owners and managers.<\/p>\n

Before computers, most data collection and analysis are done by people who collect all business transactions and write them into paper ledger; other people collect company operation data and written them into daily or weekly reports; another group of people calculates, processes and analyzes these data into reports. Such a labor manual system typically requires several weeks to generate reports and is also vulnerable to errors. Today, computers can collect and process all of these data, doing elaborate analyses and generates reports in a matter of minutes. Of course, computers process data as directed by software programs written by software people. The program can tell the computer to analyze the same data in different ways and produce different kinds of reports. Different managers get the data analyzed in different ways depending on their roles and responsibilities. For example, manufacturing managers will get report on daily or weekly operation, productivity, issues, and resources needed. Sales and Marketing managers may get report on sales, competitors, and market trends. Company owner may get report on revenues, profits, costs and major issues etc. Such elaborate data collection, processing and analyzes would have been impossible without the use of a computing information system.<\/p>\n

The development of such information system requires the skills of an Information System Managers (ISM) who starts with the analysis of user requirements within the company. Users can be managers and owners since their requirements are different. (ISM students learn this skill in Requirements Engineering courses). From these requirements, information system managers design systems that will capture data from company operation, business transactions, manufacturing outputs, costs, revenues, market trends etc. and store them into the company databases. (ISM students learn these skills in Database course) From these stored data, business software can generate different kinds of reports to meet varying requirements. The software programs have several different functions that will analyze the collected data and generate reports in formats as demanded by the users. (ISM students learn these skills in Business Intelligence course). Company operation and control are often based on the business strategy and goals; manager and owners must monitor measure to determine whether actual performance is meeting these planned goals and whether business goals have been or are likely to be achieved.
