The unemployment issue<\/p>\n

According to a new study, college graduates who are unemployed today without \u201ccorrective actions\u201d will get into a long-term joblessness and may never recover. The study found that unemployed graduates who have been without jobs for more than a year may have 40% chance of getting job as they have to compete with current graduates. If they are out of work for more than two years, their chance of getting job is less than 18% because they cannot compete with current graduates who have better current skills.<\/p>\n

In this fast changing world, getting a college education is still the best way to avoid unemployment as most good paying jobs do require a college education. The unemployment rate of college graduates in the U.S is just 4.2% in contrast with the unemployment rate of high school graduates is 18.3% (Data from Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012). Of course, a college education is needed in this Information Age but the employment issue is determined by the fields of study that they are graduating from. The highest unemployment among college graduates are in Arts, Theater, Sociology, Fashion design, Photography, Literature, History, and Geology.<\/p>\n

In the past three years graduates in Banking, Finance and Business were added to the high unemployment list but many analysts noted that these are only \u201ctemporary\u201d due to the financial crisis and not a permanent situation. A Wall Street analyst said: \u201cThere are a slow rising number of jobs available as the economy is recovering but it may take several years to absorb all unemployed people who have experiences first. It is expected by 2020, the job market for these fields will get better.\u201d However another analyst warned: \u201cOnce college graduates are out of work for more than a year, they will face some challenges. Many hiring companies do not want to hire \u201cunemployed people\u201d as they believe they are lazy, not assertive enough. Most companies prefer to hire new graduates with fresh experience and current skills. If you look closely in all jobs posting today, you will see that many companies require job applicants to be \u201cCurrently employed\u201d or \u201cRecently graduate\u201d in order to be considered for a position.\u201d<\/p>\n

With so many unemployed graduates struggling to find work, many people blame the recession and globalization. However, there is a critical shortage in certain skills that companies have trouble filling these positions. The main problem is a shortage of graduates in certain areas. And this is a global problem that happens in almost every country. According to the study over 45% of companies worldwide faced skills shortages with no solution in sight. The study listed 80 countries that need skilled workers, the number one on the listing is not the U.S but China. The main issue is there is no immediate corrective solution such as retraining for unemployed graduates.\u00a0 An analyst said: \u201cThere is a surplus of college educated people without the needed skills and there are many unfilled jobs that need skilled workers. The simple solution is retraining. If industry and universities can get together to come up with a retraining program focusing on the needed skills then the issue can be solved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study found that the country that has the highest retraining (College graduates who return to school to obtain other skills) is the U.S with 37% of graduates who return for a second degree. The lowest is in Europe with less than 2.8% graduates returning to school for additional trainings. An analyst said: \u201cIt is the attitude about having degree instead of having skills. People say that they already have degree and there is no need to go back to school. Continuous education or lifelong learning is still a new concept that many people have not accepted yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The situation in Asia is a cultural issue. Many unemployed college graduates are still living with their parents. Since they still have a shelter, home cooking meals every day, many do not have the urgent to find job or return to school for other skills. An analyst said: \u201cIt is the attitude of \u201cwait and see\u201d that hurt them. Some even hope that when the economy gets better, there will be plenty of jobs but they are just dreaming. China has over 50 million unemployed college graduates and each year, it adds another five millions.
