The woman behind Bill Gates<\/p>\n

There is an old saying: \u201cBehind every great man is always a great woman.\u201d Of course, some people do not agree with that. However if you know something about Bill Gates you probably have to agree with that \u201cold saying\u201d. Most people know Bill Gates as a \u201cMulti-Billionaire\u201d or \u201cThe richest man on earth\u201d; Business owners know Bill Gates as a \u201cVery smart business man\u201d; People who work for Bill Gates said that he is a \u201cDemanding boss and difficult to work for.\u201d Software company owners consider Bill Gates as \u201cA fierce competitors\u201d. To the public, he is both a \u201cHero\u201d, an \u201cIdol\u201d but also a \u201cVery arrogant person.\u201d These were images of Bill when he managed Microsoft until \u2026 he got married.<\/p>\n

Today everybody agree that Bill Gates is \u201cThe Billionaire who gives away his wealth to charity.\u201d He is admired for his work in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation where he spends all his time and efforts to improve education, and fight diseases all over the world. What makes him change is still a mystery. Few years ago, there was a story that he came to Carnegie Mellon and saw the tomb of Andrew Carnegie in the cemetery with the epitaph: \u201cThe man who dies rich, dies disgraced\u201d and he realized about himself then began to focus on charity. It was a good story as there was similarity between the life of Andrew Carnegie (One of the richest people of the Industrial age) and Bill Gates (One of the richest people of the Information age) but it was only a story without any confirmation.<\/p>\n

What people saw was that he changed a lot after he married Melinda. He was more pleasant to talk to, much less arrogant and more humble when appeared in public. Why a \u201cfierce competitor\u201d like him quit Microsoft to focus on charity? Why a multi-billionaire, still in his prime, decides to give away most of his wealth to fight diseases and improve education all over the world?<\/p>\n

Last week I found my answer when I attended a talk of his wife, Melinda Gates, at StanfordUniversity. Few people know about her since she was very private and always quiet. When they went out in public, she always stood next to Bill but let her husband did most of the talking. When asked, she always answered politely then referred to her husband. However people who work with her mentioned that she has a \u201cDynamic personality\u201d, who is fiercely working for what she believes in which is the charity cause.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a rare opportunity that Melinda gave a talk by herself without her famous husband where she urged them to apply innovations to change the world and make it a better place. I was inspired by her passionate talk as she emphasized that all lives have equal value and everyone should be given the same chance. She said: \u201cTwo million children were dying from diarrhea each year. Why were kids dying from a simple illness that we could easily cure with medicine available in most stores?\u201d The reason, she said is drugs that we take for granted in developed countries take 10-15 years to reach developing countries. She urged: \u201cWe need to improve the infrastructure to make sure innovations in developed countries can get into the hands of those people in need quickly.\u201d When she was asked what she thought the ideal time would be, she said: \u201cOne year, it should be available everywhere in about one year.\u201d<\/p>\n

To the audience of mostly college students, she said: \u201cDo you know that 40% of childhood deaths occurred within 30 days after birth. We can help to significantly reduce childhood deaths with vaccines. However, to reduce babies deaths within 30 days of birth also require behavior change. Health education is the most important issue and we have to make sure that all newborns in developing countries can stay alive healthily before other help can come in.\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalled her story of going to Africa few years ago to see the wild animals. But it was the people she met that had the most impact on her. She said: \u201cOnce my eyes were opened, I cannot turn away from what I saw.\u201d She urged students to travel and see what are happening in the world, especially in poor and developing countries. She explained: \u201cI think traveling more to different countries, to experience different cultures, to see different lives, to interact with different languages, is the best gift you can ever give yourself.\u201d When a student mentioned that it is difficult. She said: \u201cYou didn\u2019t come to Stanford if you don\u2019t like difficult. Figure out where your passion is and pursue it with vengeance. Gather experts. Fill in your uncomfortable. Do something now. If you believe in innovation, there are things you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the past few years, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has spent over 25 billion dollars to eradicate diseases. Ten years ago there were about 2 million people contracted polio disease but due to the vaccinate project sponsored by the foundation, the number has dropped to less than 200,000 a significant achievement from a private foundation but she said: \u201cThat is not enough; we must completely eradicate this disease permanently by having vaccinate every child possible.\u201d She said the goal is to completely wipe out diseases in the world by providing more vaccines to every developing country. She said: \u201cDeadly diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV that often afflict the world\u2019s poorest countries can be eradicated if we all working together toward that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Together, Bill and Melinda have been travelling the world to call for more actions to improve the health and eradicate diseases in poor countries. Today people refer to Bill as the \u201cPhilanthropy Billionaire\u201d but now we know that behind him there is a great woman who really makes thing happens.<\/p>\n
