The impact of Big Data analytics<\/p>\n

Big data technologies can be described as a new generation of technologies designed to extract special value from very large\u00a0volumes<\/b>\u00a0of a wide\u00a0variety<\/b>\u00a0of data from many sources, by enabling high\u00a0velocity<\/b>\u00a0capture, discovery and analysis. According to a new 2013 industry study, Big data can help improve in management decision making and is having a great impact on company\u2019s competitive and ability to avert risk. Almost 91 per cent of U.S. companies surveyed reported that better uses of Big data will lead to better decision making and help increase global competitiveness.<\/p>\n

Recently many companies are seeing benefits of using Big data analytics to improve resource management, gain competitive market advantages and having good business decisions. The survey of over 350 companies revealed that 91% of them reported that Big data leads to better decision making; 88% believe that Big data will help distinguish between winners and losers; 68% have already achieved advantage due to big data analytics; 65% agree that big data technology will be important to identify risks and protect the company from cyber attack. One giant electronic retail company reported that even they reduce regular advertising by 65% but still be able to increase sales 85% because they know more about customers and what they want via their Big Data analytics. They collect data from store video cameras, customer profiles, GPS and other technologies in all of their stores to know what customers are interested in and make them offers that they cannot refuse. The company owner said: \u201cWe do not randomly advertise anymore, we only target customers who can afford the merchandises, know what they want, understand their financial ability and offer them the best deal possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The industry study also found that spending on Business Intelligence and Big Data are rising quickly as more companies are moving to adopt this technology. The industry study predicts that Big Data spending will reach $ 15 billion dollars in 2014 and $18 Billion in 2015 although it could be much higher if companies can find enough skilled workers in this field. According to several recruiting companies, there are over 750,000 IT jobs listed in the U.S. market in August 2013, among them 320,000 positions classified as Big data or data analytics and 125.000 with titles as business intelligence. The demand is increasing faster than supply and it does not seem to slowdown as every company is looking for these skills. A Wall Street analyst wrote: \u201cThere is NOT enough skilled workers in Big Data and Business Intelligence to meet the high demand so many companies cannot start their project in Big data analytics. Many companies could not find suppliers to have these skills because this is so new, so it would be several years before they can fill the needs. However, the demand will be much higher in the next few years because many mid-sized and small companies have not even started to use Big Data analytic technology yet. If they start than the need would be much higher than any forecast.\u201d<\/p>\n

With globalization, competition is fierce; every company wants to have competitive advantage. The Big Data analytics, business intelligence functions are the key demand because every company wants to be able to analyze their own business to search for valuable information that they can use. Currently with cloud computing, mobile, and social media there are more data available for additional analytics. By analyze Facebook accounts, companies find out more about what young people are talking to each others about certain fashions, certain electronic devices, and certain things that they want and then provide them with those merchandizes. By collect their spending habit when they use credit cards, companies know who has the money to spend, how much they are willing to spend and then offer them special deals and increase their sales significantly. University across the U.S. has reported that current students enrolling in Information System Management (ISM) has increased by 34% in recent year but to be expert in Business intelligent and Big data analysis, many will need to get additional trainings, mostly in the MS degree specializing in Big data analytics which means it would be another three to five years before universities can provide some skilled workers to the industry.
