The first job<\/p>\n

A newly Computer Science graduate wrote to me: \u201cI just start a new job at a software company. I have not worked anywhere before so I am very worried as I am the only woman in this group of male developers. I do not know how to function. How do I create a positive impression and what types of dress should I wear? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Do not getting so worry. The company is hiring you to work because of your skills NOT your appearance. The first few days or few weeks for any new employee are always stressful as you are trying to adjust to the new environment. Overtime you will get used to it and be more comfortable. No one is judging you yet so do not be in a hurry to prove a point.<\/p>\n

As it is your first job, you need to be punctual at work and stay proactive in understanding how your team works. Focus on familiarizing yourself with the work by asking questions on something that you do not understand. Nobody expects you to know all aspects of the business. Be enthusiastic to learn and listen well. The first few months are always challenging as you are learning about the work so ask more questions and takes notes. As a new employee, your company expects you to ask questions in order to learn. I am sure people who answer your questions probably have asked the same questions few years ago when they started.<\/p>\n

Every company has a dress code, watch other people on how they dress before making decision. Clothes do create impact as they form an integral part of your first impression. You must dress appropriately for \u201cbusiness\u201d NOT \u201cfashion\u201d. As software developer, you can dress casually, unless you have to meet customers or attend business meeting. Do not overly concern about what to wear. As a rule, being a woman in a male dominant workplace, you always want to dress one notch above the others but not more. If they wear jeans, you can wear kakis; if you pay too much attention to the appearance and dress several notches above other team members, you may give wrong impressions which can be a barrier for your career later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
