The new battle in Cloud Computing<\/p>\n

Today \u201cCloud computing\u201d is \u201cHot\u201d as more and more companies are moving to the cloud. Basically, cloud computing is a new concept where users can do all IT works via the Internet. They do not need to own computing hardware, software as everything will be provided by the Cloud computing company. In this concept, users no longer need knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure anymore, but just use it. Cloud computing represents a new business where most Information Technology (IT) is provided by vendors to customers. Customers do not own the physical infrastructure; therefore do not have to spend a lot of money on computing equipments but renting it from a cloud computing vendor. Customers pay only for what resources that they use.<\/p>\n

Of course, this is a big \u201cShock\u201d for Indian software industry who has dominated this industry for the past twenty years. It has grown rapidly, starting from $100 Million revenue earned collectively in 1990 to $100 Billion revenue in 2012. The main business is on providing cheaper labors to code and test software products developed by companies in the U.S. However, without paying attention to market trends, without monitor technology trends, and understand customer satisfaction, the industry keeps expanding into many areas that it does not have the qualified skills. The results are low quality works when price is keep increasing and customers are not happy. Everything changes when the prices of hardware are declining and new software products need different skills than just coding and testing. The shift to Cloud computing will affect Indian Software Industry significantly because it gets most businesses from companies that outsource software development works to reduce costs. As cloud computing becomes popular, most customers will switch to it and stop software outsourcing. Today the world begins to see the emergence of few large software-as-a-services (SaaS) providers such as Google, Amazons, and IBM and most Indian software companies cannot compete with these giants. With Cloud computing, every software and tools will be standardized; it means that there will be less development works available to be outsourced anymore.<\/p>\n

Today even companies such as Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Dell and HP have recognized the challenge that the Cloud computing poses to their business and some have already begun making strategic shifts to the cloud. That means in the next few years, we will see that Google, Amazon, IBM will have to fend off others who want to get into this lucrative business. Both Google and Amazon already invested in very large data centers hosting applications to provide service to a large number of customers. Computing hardware such as Intel, Cisco, HP, and Dell already have expertise in hardware platforms and networks but they will need to have software expertise to compete, which means these companies will have to hire massive number of software workers to fill their needs. In the past few months in 2013, many of them are hiring software people from all over the world to prepare for the next battle. Cisco has already start a new business division building a platform that combines networks, storage and computing and plans to hire thousand of software workers.\u00a0Intel is already built multiple-core processor servers that offer efficient utilization of power for its data centers and hope that its technology will be more favored by customers who want less power consumption and of course, will need more software workers to operate these centers. Microsoft who no longer has the leading technology when it comes to providing software as a services is struggled with Google who is developing an independent platform for cloud computing. In these battles between two giants, skilled software workers will be a key factor that determines winner and loser.<\/p>\n

In this battle of giants, who will come out as winner remain to be seen but one thing is certain: The need for more software skilled workers as all companies need to have software people to make their business successful. Today software as a service will be the key factor as software as a product is no longer important when things are standardized. That explain why the number of students enrolled in software engineering and information system management are increasing fast in every university in the U.S. Of course, with the shortage of software skilled people, most companies must look outside to hire. An analyst wrote: \u201cAs the trend changes, as the battle for domination happens, software people will not have to worry since they will have jobs anyway. But Indian software companies may not be able to enjoy their growth as in the past; their major problem is losing workers to U.S. companies.
