The new trend: Outsource hardware, Insource software<\/p>\n

Twenty years ago, Software outsourcing was \u201cHot\u201d as many companies were reducing costs by moved software works to lower cost countries. Today software outsourcing is \u201cfizzled\u201d because most outsourced projects provided by lower cost suppliers have low quality but the price is keep getting higher. It is predicted that in the next few years, most software outsourcing will disappear.<\/p>\n

What will happen to the outsourcing service providers? Some will move to cloud computing to survive but many will file for bankruptcy and eventually disappear. The reason is the market trend has changed; even IT companies that did well in the past may suffer significantly if they cannot change fast. Technology always changes and if you do not catch up, you will be left behind. Few years ago, who could predict that Laptops would be replaced by smartphones and tablets? Today most companies that build laptops such as Dell, Toshiba, and HP are in serious financial problem. Many Taiwanese and Chinese companies that build PC, laptops are on the verge of bankruptcy. Some large companies such as Asus, ZTE move quickly to smartphones and tablets but most will probably disappear because they do not know market trend. Few years ago who could predict that AOL, MSL and Yahoo would be replaced by Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn? As the stock value of Facebook, Twitter are on the rise, MSL, AOL stocks are on the declined. Who would think that CD and DVD would be replaced by internet download? Today only 12% of music and movies are sold on CD and DVD as fewer people would use them. Who would predict that a computer company such as Apple would become the largest company in the U.S. replacing GM, GE and Coca Cola? Who would know that Google\u2019s stock has reached over $1000, faster than any other stock in the market? A senior software executive laments: \u201cThe good time of software outsourcing is gone, we grow too fast, we enjoy it so much as our profit keep rising and it blinds us. We do not pay attention to our quality that is getting worst, we do not pay attention that our price is still increasing and customers are no longer satisfied. What they give, they can take back and when the \u201cinsourcing\u201d trend happens, we are all \u201cshock\u201d but it is too late. Today customers do not want coding and testing anymore, they want social, mobile, analytics and cloud (SMAC) and we do not have skilled workers in these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

An industry analyst explains: \u201cAs more companies are using Information Technology (IT) to increase efficiency, they have to invest a lot of money to buy computer servers, hardware, set up data center, network, install software and hire IT people. These are expensive items that cost a lot of money so they must reduce costs to be profitable. Since they cannot cut costs on hardware or network, they start with people and IT outsourcing is about reducing labor costs. In the past twenty years, many companies have saved money. However over time, the cost of IT outsourcing is increasing but at the same time the quality of the services is decreasing to the point that it is no longer profitable to outsource on labor anymore. They own huge data centers with millions of servers and know how to operate them efficiently. They have deep knowledge around platforms and applications that can help improve efficiencies for customers.
