Why going to college?<\/p>\n

A student wrote: \u201cThere are many college graduates in my country who could not find work; my question is why going to college? Is vocational school a better choice? Or finding job after high school a better choice than go to college? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Although college is NOT for everybody; some would be better to go to vocational schools or finding work after getting a high school education but my question is if college graduates are having difficulty finding work; would graduates from vocational schools or high school graduates can get jobs easier? What kind of jobs do they have and what kind of salaries do they make?<\/p>\n

Today college education is critical to a country\u2019s economic development. It develops knowledge and skills that allow people to get better careers, better salaries, and help them to contribute to their society and strengthen the country\u2019s economy. In my opinion, getting a college education is one of the best things young people can do for themselves to ensure they lead a better and prosperous life. We are living in a globalized world where competition among countries is fierce; any country that its citizens are not well educated will be exploited, abused and even weaken its national defense. Basically education can improve people’s lives, benefits its society, and the country as a whole. A well educated person often has more opportunities in life, earns more, and has a higher standard of living. Skilled workers enable a country to develop its industries and become wealthier, which benefits everyone. If you look closely among countries, you will find that the poorest countries are countries where the majority of their people are not educated. Many cannot go to school because they need to work to help their families survive. Of those who go to school, many drop out before they develop the basic foundation such as reading, writing and math skills. These people will grow up to be illiterate adult and they often live a hard lives working from one job to another and often be exploited, abused and have a desperate lives.<\/p>\n

If you look at the number of unemployed college graduates, you probably will find that many of them may have degree but do not have the skills necessary to do work. Many are not properly informed about career planning or what skills are needed to get good jobs so they make mistakes by selected fields of study that are no longer needed so they cannot find employment. Others may go to schools that trainings are obsolete so students do not learn anything useful. That is why I always emphasized that young people should read more, know more, understand more about the world around them so they can select the right schools and plan their careers accordingly.<\/p>\n

As a professor in Computer Science, I may be biased but in my opinion Information Technology (Computer science, Software Engineering, Information System Management etc.) is probably the best choice for college students. Today almost everything requires knowledge in computers, whether you write a letter or access to websites to look for information. However a career in computing goes far beyond the typical tasks many of us do with the aid of a computer. It involves in depth knowledge of computing for which you need to go to college to learn. Information technology jobs are always in high demand so study IT is a logical choice.<\/p>\n

Information technology is a broad field with many specialties; you should have a general understanding of different areas and select the right area for you.
