Motivate students<\/p>\n

Every professor wants their students to learn and apply what they have learned to develop their skills. However motivating students to learn is not easy because there are so many distractions both inside and outside the school. The traditional \u201cLearning by memorization\u201d and lecture approach when professors talk and students listen are already obsolete as it only produces graduates who can recite \u201cthings\u201d but may not have the practical skills and experiences required in the modern business world therefore, we need a different approach.<\/p>\n

To get students to learn, I assign weekly readings that students must read before coming to class as I focus more on class discussion rather than giving lectures. I think the best way to motivate students to learn is actively involve them in their own learning. Standing in front of them and lecturing to them is not an effective method of teaching. It is better to get them to involve in class discussion, teamwork to solve problems and compete for the best way to do it. Traditionally, most U.S. universities courses have two exams in each semester \u2013 A midterm and a final exam but instead of doing that, I have weekly short exam (quiz) on everyFriday\u00a0and no midterm and final exams. By having several short exams based on each week materials it requires students to attend all classes, read all assignments in order to do well in these weekly exams; that also mean that they must learn everything on a steady pace.<\/p>\n

Every year, on the first day of classes as I go over the course syllabus, students look at the reading assignments, weekly exams and begin to groans. I then asking them \u201cWhat are you thinking when you see many exams? What do you want to learn in my courses? What do you like and do not like about this approach? And then the big question: \u201cTell me what kind of knowledge and skills you will need to get a good paying job today?\u201d I let the students raise their opinions and discuss with them on why I made that decision. Of course, I also let them know that I would have to work harder to grade 30 to 50 exams every week but I do that because I care about their learning. In the end, most are convinced that this approach will make them learn more and help their future.<\/p>\n

Having weekly test will helps students to stay current with the class\u2019s progress; students also know how well they do on a weekly basis rather than have to wait 6 or 7 weeks for the midterm exam. It eliminates the \u201cCramming\u201d that students often do when they have to learn a lot of materials few days before a big exam; in this approach, they only learn a smaller piece of material every week. Students who do not do well on first week are forced to study on the next test; if students do not do well in one test, there is always hope for better performance in the next ones, as contrast a bad midterm exam that could give students a low final grade.<\/p>\n

For many years, I always followed this approach and students commented later that they actually liked this better than the traditional two exams per semester. I also heard students in other courses said that they wished that they could take my course instead. It was clear that this approach was successful in getting students to learn more. By having weekly exam, it also gives me information about how students learn in my course. If a student did not do well, I can pay more attention to that student but if most students missed a question, it is an indicator that they do not understand that subject and I need to review that subject in class again. By monitoring the course\u2019s progress, I can adjust my teaching according to students\u2019 learning. Students are always motivated to learn from professor who is caring of their progress. The reason that students did not do well because they do not understand why they should do it so I spend time explaining why the topic or activity is important to them and what they will do with that knowledge when they go to work. Students are motivated and committed to learn something that has value for them that they can see as meeting their needs. They will work hard and do more if they are convinced that what they are learning will help them in the future.<\/p>\n

Traditional education is focusing too much on what academic people think students should know but many things that they taught quickly gets forgotten, because it does not contribute to the challenge that students will face when they go to work. Instead of having them memorize all the usual facts and data, I often discuss with them about their careers, their vision for the future, for the kinds of thinking and understanding that they will need to do well in a complex globalized world.
