Software testing jobs<\/p>\n

As more Information Technology (IT) devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, videogames players etc. are being used, more software will be needed and every software company will need software testers to remove defects and make these devices suitable for use. In the past two years, demand for software testers in the world has increased by 45% as compare with the number of testers in 2010. A software manager said:\u00a0“For every three developers companies hire, they also have to hire one tester.” Big software companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Oracle has thousands of software testers; Online retail industry also hire thousands of software testers to make sure that their websites work well, especially during the busy holiday season. Having good testers is like buying insurance and without them; their websites could be at risk when hundred thousands of customers are buying things on line at the same time.<\/p>\n

Today there are high demand for software testers in the areas of mobile platforms, wireless devices, online businesses and financial services. With the increase of smartphones usage everywhere, customers demand higher quality applications as it is the devices to do many things from phone call to buy thing on line, from paying bills to search things on the internet etc. Mobile testing is one of the fastest growing areas with high demand in many countries. There are more opportunities for skilled testers on mobile due to the increasing complexity of mobile apps such as mobile health and mobile finance where the apps have to interface with other software from hospitals, stock markets, banks etc.<\/p>\n

Since most university training programs do not offer a full course in testing, software companies often hire graduates with knowledge in software development process who understand how software fits into the company business to work as testers. Beside technical skills such as programming languages and data structures, and software development lifecycle, testers must also have good soft-skills such as communication and teamwork because they must be able to maintain a cooperative relationship with developers. Testers must have strong ability to communicate with both technical people such as programmers and developers as well as non-technical people such as users, customers or managers.<\/p>\n

While software testing involves mostly software applications but there is another area that is also growing fast: Videogame testing. These game testers test video games by verify the interfaces and integrity of the game components and demonstrates that these components meet their design and technical requirements. As more videogames are being developed, the need for game testers is also increasing fast. Many college students believe videogame testing is a fun job as they can play videogames all day and get paid for it. One of my students who worked as game tester for Disney told me: \u201cVideo game is like ice cream which is good to eat but eating 100 ice creams a day will make you sick. Imagine you have to play the same videogame 100 times a day to find bugs, it is not fun at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among IT jobs, testing work is very stable as all software companies need testers, all online retailers need testers. As more people are relying on smartphones to do many things, and mobile apps are getting more complex, the needs for graduates to enter the mobile testing will increase.
