Last week I invited him to give a talk about job interview techniques to my students when he also answered questions from students:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Student A: \u201cI did well in several technical interviews, but still got rejected and I did not know why?<\/p>\n<p>Thomas: \u201cHiring companies never tell you why they do not hire you. However your answers to technical questions in the interview are only part of the evaluation process. Company does not make decision solely on your technical skills. There are other things that you may need to pay attention. The common mistake technology students often made is they focus too much on the technical aspect. Some believe if they can answer all technical questions than they will pass the job interview but they forget about other aspects such as their appearance or behavior. As a hiring manager, my first impression of any applicant before I even talk to them is their appearance. If they dress sloppily, do not iron their clothes, or comb their hair than it means \u201cI do not care.\u201d In that case why should I care about them? If a candidate comes to the interview after playing soccer in sporting clothes full of sweats, what does it means to the hiring manager? If a person looks like he just wakes up after a long sleep, not washing their face, or brushing their teeth then what do hiring manager think of him? Many students do not know that appearance is very important in a job interview. If hiring managers do not like the way you appear do you think they would hire you? Some students go to the interview still wearing headphone connect to their iPods then move around in the seat, shaking their heads with the music that they listen, or tapping their foot when waiting to be called in for the interview. How do you think hiring managers would react to people like that? Although technical skills are important but your appearance and behavior are also important too. So be prepared to look and act like a professional and NOT like a college student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Student B: \u201cI had an interview with a software company but they only asked about my summer job when I worked for a clothing store. What does it has to do with a technical job?<\/p>\n<p>Thomas: \u201cThey probably want to know about your working attitude. Even it may be a temporary job but it is still a job. If you do not like that job and you say bad things about your boss or the company than it is a signal that you have a negative attitude. Even if your boss was a dictator and your former company did not treat you well, you must keep it to yourself. Never say anything bad about anybody or anything in the interview. You must be courteous because they may ask your opinions about others to determine your attitude whether you a positive or negative person. If you say bad thing about your boss, you could do the same to them too and it could be the reason why they did not hire you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Student C: \u201cI did well in the interview and was very polite during the interview but still did not get the job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas: \u201cThere are other reasons. Maybe you did not read the job description carefully or listen to their question clearly so you give them the \u201cwrong answers\u201d. For example, the job requires C++ programming skills but you talk about C programming or Java programming. If the job requires database knowledge and you only talk about data structures than you may miss something. It is very important to listen carefully to each question, if you are not sure, ask them to repeat the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Student C: \u201cBut I did everything correct and they asked me about my expectation so I told them about the salary \u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas: \u201cOh! You make a big mistake. Never talk about salary. They have NOT offered you the job yet so never bring up salary. Even they want to know your salary requirements; you need to mention that you have not thought about anything but only care about building a career with them. In this case, you avoid discussion about money but open for negotiation when they offer you a job.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Student B: \u201cWhat else we need to avoid in a job interview?<\/p>\n<p>Thomas: \u201cAnother common mistake among students is you did not ask them any question. A job interview is where companies learn about you and you also learn about them. They have to decide whether or not they want to hire you but you also have to decide whether you want to work for them or not. You should ask questions about the company business, its goals and work environment. That means you must do some research before the interview to come up with good questions to ask. By having several good questions it proves that you care about the company and want to work for them. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Student A: \u201cWhat will happen if you do everything right but still not get the job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas: \u201cSometimes the fact is the hiring manager does not like you. Even you have skills and can answer everything but for whatever reason the hiring manager does not like you and does not think you \u201cfit in\u201d the company. You may qualify for the job but your personality does not fit with the hiring manager.
