The future of education<\/p>\n

After I wrote about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), several students wrote to me and thanked me for providing useful information but some people expressed their doubt about the value of MOOC. One person wrote: \u201cMOOC is only a fashion and it will fade away after few years when students are tired of it. The traditional education that lasted for thousand years will remain.\u201d Another person wrote: \u201cAre you advocating abandoning schools and replacing by MOOCs education?\u201d<\/p>\n

In this blog, I only express my own opinion about what is happening in the science and technology world. I never advocate abandoning traditional education system as I believe that traditional schools have certain values that MOOCs cannot replace. However I also believe traditional education must also change to meet the need of this 21st century. The purpose of education is to provide the trainings needed to help people to develop the necessary knowledge and skills so they can contribute to their society and the country.<\/p>\n

If you look at the youth population of every country, only a small part, maybe 20% to 30% of high school graduates would go to college. The others 70% have to go to work to help their family because they cannot afford to pay for college even today a college education is needed to get a good job. With MOOCs, these people now have an opportunity to get access to a quality education that only been available to a few. Although they may not get the same experience as students on traditional college but the access to a quality education will allow them to develop skills and enable them to compete for job in a global market. The goal of MOOCs is to educate everyone who want to learn regardless where they from. There are all kind of people who are taking MOOCs courses, many are young people who could not afford to go to college but want to have certain skills; others are working people with degrees but want to improve their skills. There are college students who want to supplement what they are taught in schools. Basically everyone understands that to survive in today\u2019s competitive job market people must have skills and how to use it in the job.<\/p>\n

If you look at the education system in some countries, only a few top schools have the best training programs but others are not keeping their trainings up to date to meet the needs of the job market. Many graduates have the degree but may not have the skills to meet market\u2019s skills demands. However now they have a solution by take additional courses from MOOCs to improve their skills, their chance of getting a good job will improve. As million of students around the world are taking classes in MOOC, some schools will have to rethink what it means to teach and change their approach to education.<\/p>\n

MOOC is a technology platform that allows the best universities and best professors to provide education to anyone who want to learn; its mission is to educate the whole world. MOOC is not a university as it does not produce its own curriculum. MOOCs courses are mostly the same courses that are being taught in several top universities such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc. In this globalized world, borders are no longer keep people away but they can work anywhere using technology, so it is better to provide trainings to as many as possible.<\/p>\n

Few months ago, (June 2013) Microsoft invited more than 400 university professors from 29 countries to come to a meeting at Microsoft headquarter in Redmond where Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft had something to say. In front of these educators, he declared that he sees enormous potential of Massive Open Online courses (MOOCs) as a new direction for the future of education. He emphasized \u201cWe\u2019re on the beginning of something very profound\u201d and asked these educators to look seriously in this new trend. He also mentioned that MOOCs will be taught by a small group of top professors who will educate a very large number of students, from all over the world. These MOOCs professors, who are experts in their fields, will receive significant support and funding from the industry to \u201ceducate the whole world\u201d. In answering questions from audiences, Mr. Gates said that online education is NOT just simply put a lecture on video as learning is much more than that, and he emphasized the aspect of learning by doing method.\u00a0He answered the question about the value of a college degree, traditionally a college degree was an indicating skill in certain areas that could be translated to employment but he said: \u201cIt may not be the case anymore as some training programs are obsolete and some students are pursuing \u201cdegree\u201d instead of knowledge and skills.\u201d He asked the audiences to keep current with the progress of technology instead of just relying in what they have learned in the past. He confirmed that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been funding several MOOCs courses such as the Khan Academy as he believed that these online courses that focus on science, math and technology have significant value in educate students from all over the world.<\/p>\n

With the popularity of MOOC, I believe this new approach will force many universities to change. It does not means we will not have schools but it will make many education leaders to think seriously about their view of education and what they can use technology to improve knowledge and skills of students. Today technology can be use to improve education as I often use some short video films from KhanAcademy or YouTube in my class as supplement materials. KhanAcademy offers thousands of videos on academic subjects to help students learn what they want, when they want, at their own pace. The quality of the instruction is very good and today there are many other great sources of educational videos, e-books, learning games, academic papers available to anyone with an Internet connection.<\/p>\n

MOOCs is a new approach in education, it will change education system and teaching method. Maybe ten or twenty year from now people will look back at the traditional education of the 20th<\/sup>\u00a0century and ask: \u201cWhy students must sit quiet in a room for hours to listen to a lecture by a teacher? Why don\u2019t they allow students to access to classes from wherever they live and study whenever they want? Why a professor is limited to teach only thirty or fifty students when he or she can teach for several thousand students at the same time?\u201d Why do students have to go to school or go to another country to get an education? Why can\u2019t they study at home in front of a computer or tablets and take class from the best professors who live in half way around the world?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
