To get a job interview<\/p>\n

There are two important factors that college graduates looking for job must pay attention: Resume and Job interview. A good resume will lead to job interview and good interview will get you the job. If your resume is not well written, you will not get a job interview and without interview you will not get the job. Therefore graduates must know how to write a good resume AND understand how companies review resumes.<\/p>\n

Since most companies receive thousands of resume each week, they cannot read all of them to select qualified applicants. The common way to review all resumes is using technology to determine whether a candidate is qualified for the job or not. The most popular technology is a software application that scans all resumes, identify \u201ckeyword matching\u201d to the required qualifications listed in the job posting. For example, if the required skill is \u201cJava Programming\u201d with \u201ctwo years of experience\u201d and your resume do not have these two \u201ckey words\u201d than you are eliminated from the list of qualified candidates. If the job posting is \u201cSoftware programmer\u201d but your resume lists \u201cSoftware developer\u201d than you are also eliminated because the software cannot distinguishes \u201cProgrammer\u201d and \u201cDeveloper\u201d. If you job posting requires a \u201cBachelor\u2019s degree\u201d and your resume lists \u201cMaster\u2019s degree\u201d than you are also eliminated because the software do not know Master\u2019s degree is higher than the bachelor\u2019s.<\/p>\n

What this means is that you must have \u201cyour kills listed exactly as listed on the job description\u201d, the college degree (Bachelor, Master or Ph.D) including the number of years of experience. This is the reason why you cannot write just one \u201cstandard resume\u201d, send to many companies and hope someone will call you to come for interview. This \u201cone for all\u201d approach never works because today it is not a person who reviews your resume but a machine, a robot, software that read applications and resumes.<\/p>\n

The \u201cresume reviewing system\u201d is set up to rank candidates against keyword searches based on the number of repetitions of each keyword in the resume. So you also need to emphasize your skills in each position that is applicable. For example, someone with the phrase “Web development experience” in his resume four times will show up as less important than someone with the same word repeated six times. The software will count the number of \u201ckey word matching\u201d as more relevant.<\/p>\n

Soft skills such as “organization skills,” “communication skills,” “Teamwork\u201d should not just be part of your keywords but they should be part of an example, and this is one of the key reasons to get interview process. Instead of saying you have good presentation skill; you must also give example such as \u201cBeing a team leader of the capstone project that requires you to give weekly presentation to customers.”<\/p>\n

By understand how companies review resumes you must read each job requirements carefully then write each resume with \u201ckeywords matching\u201d that fit the job requirements, and offer detailed examples of why you are the ideal candidate for the job.
