Enrollment in IT fields in U.S. Colleges<\/p>\n

This year (2013) Information Technology (IT) programs such as\u00a0Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information System Management are experiencing a record number of applications as more high school graduates are enrolling in this fast growth, high demand, and high salaries area. All top schools such as Stanford, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon have received thousands of applications more than the usual.<\/p>\n

School admissions officers are seeing so much interest in these fields that already break all record for applications in history. An assistant dean for education at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science told the newspapers:\u00a0Related Content<\/p>\n

“It is clear that computer fields are on the rise and even the U.S. economy is still recovering but most IT grads are getting hired at good salaries. Today students see applications of information technology in everything, from office to manufacturing, from laptop to mobile, and they know where their future is. Currently IT is dominating everything much more than it was 10 years ago.”<\/p>\n

Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, which is ranked third among all universities by U.S. News & World Report, received over 9,500 applications this year and will accept only 400 of them. In contrast, in the past Carnegie Mellon received 5,500 applications on the average. The simple reason is CMU is one of the few schools that claimed to have one hundred percent of graduates placed for over a decade and most graduates received the highest salary in the industry. According to U.S. government report, enrollment in U.S. information technology fields has been climbing for the last five years, and on the average increasing 12% each year. Overall each year the U.S. graduates about 25,000 bachelor\u2019s degrees in IT area, which is far less than the industry demand of 80,000 new position opening by the industry per year.<\/p>\n

Stanford University has also seen its computer science applications increase by 83% in the last three years. Although Stanford is ranked third by U.S. News & World Report, the department expects to see its enrollment continue to rise as demand is much higher than supply. A school admission officer said: \u201cRelated Content<\/p>\n

Our enrollment was up 30% over last fall, and we expect to see more growth on an annual basis. Our numbers of students studying computer science has exceeded that all previous record. There is greater interest among young people to study this field which reflects the fact that computers are having an impact on everything.” Although Stanford has about 400 students who study computer science but over 90% of the university’s students are now taking at least one computer course even though it is not a requirement. A business student explained: \u201cToday, everything you do is impacted by technology. No matter what job you have, you must know something about computer. That is why the \u201cIntroduction to computer science\u201d is the most popular class among business students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another student said: “Many young people listened to Steve Jobs\u2019 speech at Stanford University and motivate to do something. As high-tech economy is booming in every country, so many startups have done well such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and the explosion of mobile applications, young people is saying that if we do not jump into this field than we will miss the chance of a lifetime.” Of course, the real motivator for many students is jobs. As every day, newspapers and TV with news about unemployment in certain area but the shortage of IT workers, many students begin to realize that if they want to have a good career, good salary they better get into the field that is growing fast and has high demand.<\/p>\n

An U.S. college association officer said: “If you study IT, you will not have to look for job but the job will look for you. In the past five years, our IT graduates had close to 100% employment as the demand is high. If they graduate from top schools such as CMU or Stanford they may have multiple offers, stock options, and signing bonuses. Today a computer science or software engineering graduates can make much more than other fields. If you are going to spend four years in school, why not selecting the best area that will give you the best job, the best salary, and the best opportunity?”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
