Learning and employment<\/p>\n

Traditional education is focusing on provide students with \u201cGeneral knowledge\u201d and teachers are responsible for the \u201cTransfer of knowledge\u201d. After students obtained the knowledge and graduated, they have to find job on their own as teachers are not responsible for the employment of students. Because of this, teachers often do not pay attention to the job market, what the industry needs, or the skills required to get hired. Many teachers have no idea about the percentage of graduates who get jobs related to their fields of study because their priority is to teach, NOT helping students find employment. This does not mean that they do not care but their job is to teach, even some do provide advices to students about job opportunities, resume preparation, or interview guidance.<\/p>\n

In this competitive job market, students need all the help they can get and teachers should pay attention to skill trainings that may lead to students\u2019 employment. As the number of unemployed college graduated increases, many students are disappointed with the current education; some do not see the value of education or the need to be educated. Some may be discouraged and quit school which the society may end up with high numbers of uneducated young people. To overcome this, schools and teachers should make intensive efforts to engage students in career planning and provide them with the facts about what particular careers entail and how training programs can help.<\/p>\n

School must develop comprehensive information about career planning on various occupations. While this information will benefit all students as well as companies, it will be of particular interest to students who are not well informed about career or educational choices. By having reliable, comprehensive information about job opportunities and related trainings, students can make the right choices in selecting the right fields of study. Schools must also provide career information to parents too as they have significant influence over students\u2019 choice in college.<\/p>\n

Today most top schools in developed countries have integrated career planning into their curriculum and challenging students to think about their academic, personal, and career goals while entering school. When teaching in S. Korea and Japan, I also found that college students and family are required to attend a career planning session BEFORE they get accepted to college. The Scandinavian school systems (Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark) do it earlier where career counseling and planning are mandatory for all students in the ninth grade (ages 15) when they learn about various occupations, wages, as well as academic and vocational training paths. They often visit companies to see the actual work environment and learn how to prepare for a career in those companies. Parents are encouraged to take part in the career planning, including attending career planning meeting designed to increase their knowledge of various career opportunities.<\/p>\n

College students often wonder and ask, \u201cWhy are we study this? Why do I need to know this? Why are we spending so much time on this? Why do we have to do this type of work? When students do not see the connection between the content and activities of the course and their future lives, they question what teachers ask them to do. By having the answers to these questions, teachers can maintain student interest and motivation in learning. As the job market is getting more competitive, teachers should discuss the learning outcomes of the course and clearly tie them to the job market required activities. Students must understand what they need; why they need it and how do they develop the skills.<\/p>\n

Clear learning outcomes are the foundation of an active learning method and a basic of all instructional design. Teachers should clearly explain to students that by complete the class or assignment, they will be able to know something or do something with that skill. Teachers should discuss the relevance of the materials with students. Students need to know why the knowledge and skills identified in the class are important in their future lives. When students understand what the course is helping them accomplish, they will find the work more meaningful.<\/p>\n

I often provide an outline of course\u2019s material on the courses syllabus. To get students\u2019 attention and motivate them to learn, I also start the class with a simple explanation that answers the three questions: What? Why? And How?<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What are we learning in class today? What concepts will we address? What activities will we do?<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why are we studying this? How are today\u2019s activities related to the course learning outcomes? What should we know or be able to do after today\u2019s class? How can the information and skills be used in our life?<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How are we going to address the content? Will I lecture in class? Or will I ask for class discussions?<\/p>\n

When students understand clearly the value, purpose, and procedures for course activities, they are more likely to see the value of what they are being asked to learn and consequently will participate more fully in the course.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
