A conversation with parents<\/p>\n

Last week, I had a dinner at a friend\u2019s house. During the conversation he told me: \u201cMy son graduated from college six months ago but could not find job and he is frustrated. I do not know what to do so maybe you can you offer him some advice?\u201d I asked: \u201cWhat his field of study is and what kind of job that he is looking for?\u201d He said: \u201cMy son graduated with a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Economics. He had applied to jobs in government but could not find any. He is desperate and would work at any type of job.\u201d<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cEconomics is a very broad field with many specializations. I do not know what area that your son is specialized in. However, most good jobs require a master and doctorate degree. An economist with advanced degrees is likely to get a job in government than a bachelor. If he continues to a doctorate degree, he can find teaching jobs in university. However, if he wants to go back to school, instead of getting a master\u2019s degree\u00a0in economics, he may consider getting a master’s in business administration instead. This would open up more job opportunities in private companies. I do not know much about the economics area, your son should talk to his professors or counselors for better advices.\u201d<\/p>\n

My friend asked: \u201cI have another daughter who is going to college next year. I do not know what to advice her but with my son who is now without job, I worry about my daughter\u2019s future too. What could I do?<\/p>\n

Once you come up with several careers options, you may want to do a reality check by asking her to evaluate her choice. For example, you may say: \u201cDo you really want to be a software developer even you have weaknesses in math?\u201dOr \u201cDo you really want to study arts, although you know that there is no job in this area?\u201d Of courses there will be issues during the discussion, but it is still important to face it now and be realistic about the career choice rather than wait until later time. Many young people do not know how to plan their career or set direction for their education so they either \u201cFollow their dream\u201d or \u201cFollow their friends\u201d but their friends also do not know what they want so they all follow something that they do not even know.
