Last week I invited him to give a talk about interview techniques to my students. Following was what he shared with the class.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas began: \u201cFor the past ten years I have interviewed thousands of students and hired hundreds of them. I found that a majority of graduates were not well prepared for job interview even they had good technical skills.\u00a0At the invitation of Professor Vu, I would like to share with you my view of what I am looking for in a job interview. Basically, it is simple because all my questions are based on one thing: \u201cWhy should I hire you?\u201d If you can come up with reasonable answers to my questions then you will get hired, if not then you miss a chance to work for one of the top software companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cThere is rumor among students that hiring managers only ask \u201cstandard questions\u201d and if they can find them, memorize the answers then they will pass the job interview. There are books that claim that they have all these \u201cStandard questions\u201d. This is NOT true as these people only try to sell you their books. The fact is there are no \u201cstandard questions\u201d as each hiring manager will ask whatever questions that comes to their mind, which means they can ask you about everything. There is no way you can memorize few answers and hope to pass a job interview so do not waste your time.\u00a0 My advice is in order to prepare for a job interview; you must read the job description careful, gathering information about the job that you are applying. By understand the job that you are expected to do with as much as detail possible then you will do well. You may need to know how to transform the skills that you learn in school into the job that you will do. Do NOT try to memorize anything; job interview is NOT a test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must prove that you want to build a career with the company NOT just a job. This means you must research about the company, know something about the company as well as the job that you are applying. Find out as much as you can about the company you are interviewing for and the position you are interviewing for. Understand what the company does so when you come to the interview with significant information about what you want to do and what the company is doing will give you significant advantage over others. In other words, you are prepared, you care about what you will be doing, and that you are ready to build a career. As I ask \u201cWhat do you know about my company\u201d you will tell me many things about my company, maybe something I do not even know then you will impress me. If you know nothing about my company or give me answers such as \u201cIt is a good company.\u201d Or \u201cI like your company\u201d then it means you do not spend time to plan for your career or serious about my company. In that case, you miss the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou must know to ask questions too. I am expected that you will discuss your career and let me know something about yourselves so I know how to evaluate you. You should go in the interview with several questions you want answered about the job you\u2019re interviewing for. What kinds of specific problems will you be solving? What is the working environment like? Ask follow-up questions about things you learned during your research about my company. Ask questions about the things that I ask you in the interview. Do not be afraid to ask questions, an interview is a conversation NOT a test. I need to know more about you so I can make decision whether to hire you or not and I do not want to hire someone who cannot talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not think too much about money or salary during the interview. If you work in the Information technology area, you will make a lot of money. As you are building a career, make sure that it is because you love to do this type of work. Make sure that you want to work for my company, and the people who work there for a long time. If you only want a job or if you only want money then you will not last long in this type of work. Maybe someday you will not happy, maybe in few years you want to change job, maybe you want more money but at this time you must commit to build a career and not just a short term job. To me, loyalty is important but you must be loyal to yourself first. I know how to ask questions to see what type of workers you are. Are you the types that only want money or you want to build a career? Are you the type that will switch job after few years or you will stay and build a career with the company. Are you someone we can rely on or are you someone who just go to work because you need a job. I know how to determine what type of workers that I will hire because it is my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the interview does not ask you to wear certain type of clothes but you must use you common sense. Do not be arrogant and think you can wear whatever you want to the interview. If you wear blue jeans, T Shirt and sandals to the interview, it is a sign of disrespect or a sign of immature. I know how to deal with people like that as I will politely tell them to go home and change clothes before I will talk to them. As you are interviewing for a job, you are no longer a student but a professional so act like a professional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease arrive early to the interview do not be late as I do not want to wait. There are many people that I need to interview and you are NOT the only one. If you do not show up on time, somebody else and they may take your job. Do not use excuse if you come late regardless whether it is weather or traffic, it does not matter to me. If you do not come, it means you do not care and in that case why do I want to hire you? Please remember that technical skills are only half of the skills, there are others such as maturity, soft-skills, and most of all your characters, your personality, your honesty etc. I do not only ask you about technical skills but I will ask a lot of questions about other things to find out more about you before I make decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy last advice: Do not be nervous, the interview is a short period that I want to know more about you as you also want to know more about my company so it is a conversation that both sides try to understand each other.
