The “app economy” explode<\/p>\n

Today technology is the main driver for the economy and information technology is the fastest job creation industry. A Wall Street analyst declared: \u201cTo get out of the economic recession, country must start with technology industry to create more jobs then everything will follow.\u201d With mobile technology is still growing fast, more jobs related to mobile are being created which prompt economists to call it the \u201cApp economy\u201d. App economy is a network of developers and companies that write software for mobile platforms. These platforms (IOS, Android, and Window 8) offer developers easy access to a global market of smartphone users. For example a mobile app created by an Indian developer can be sold by the app stores to customers all over the world. According to mobile apps industry, the app economy will double in the next four years, growing to $150 billion and could create about five to seven million new mobile app development jobs. The question is whether a country has enough skilled app developers to expand globally and capture this fast growing market?<\/p>\n

Last week the mobile app industry released their first study of the app economy based on an analysis of data it has collected from 2008 to 2012: From 2008 to 2010, 86% of mobile apps were created by American and European developers but since 2010 to 2012 about 62% of new mobile apps were from India and Africa. It turns out that these countries are getting quickly into the app economy and more customers are buying their apps. Although the most popular apps are still created by American companies but with nearly two-thirds of new mobile apps come from other countries, it is estimated that it has created over a million new jobs for India and African countries.<\/p>\n

Few years ago, economists ignored the \u201capp economy\u201d and considered it insignificant as most mobile app are sold for one to five dollars but those are mostly game applications. Today the mobile apps market has evolved to a more sophisticated with large mobile apps such as mobile payment, mobile medicine, mobile commerce and mobile government with market value over $76 billion dollars and it has created a lot of new jobs. In the U.S there are over 700,000 people working in the app economy with income approximately $55,000 a year. Although few have become millionaire as in the past but the study found that these jobs are stable due to many software companies are moving to develop mobile apps (Smart phone and tablets). Many large companies are also integrating these mobile apps into their business such as online sales and mobile payment. However, in India, the app economy has created over a million new jobs in the past three years with average income of $22,000 U.S dollars for each developer. China also claimed to have several million jobs related to the mobile and tablets market but did not gave additional data. In this global recession, any country that can create million new jobs for their people would be considered successful.<\/p>\n

Since large portion of the growth in mobile is happening in developing countries, the future grow of app economy is expected to happen there. To protect this new market, European lawmakers are considering stricter data privacy protection laws to make sure that they can create more jobs for their economies and prevent American tech companies to get in. One policy would require that Europeans\u2019 data stay on servers in Europe, which could make it more expensive for American developers to compete there. Several Asian countries are also pushing for similar laws to prevent U.S. app companies to compete with their locally developed apps and keep the fast growing mobile industry and jobs to remain local. Of course U.S considered this is a trade barrier and protest since American developers are finding difficult to compete with local developers. A European government officer said: \u201cIn this global recession, every government is protecting its economy and encourages job creation for their people. The U.S. can protest but nobody will listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The issue is the \u201capp economy\u201d can create more jobs and improve the economy, but does the country have enough skilled workers to make this a reality? According to the mobile app industry study, 75% of university\u2019s training programs are still focus on personal computer NOT mobile; and a majority of computer science graduates do not have skills in mobile app development. An industry representative lamented: \u201cWe could grow faster and create more jobs if university could change faster. We need more app developers because the PC era is over, it is mobile era now (Smartphone and tablets).<\/p>\n

The app economy is getting more attention due to its potential in job creation and many governments begin to realize it. Few weeks ago, Chinese government is pushing hard for all universities to focus on mobile apps development as they do not want to have apps made elsewhere to be sold there, a clear sign of how important this large country is treating the app economy. The study found that 85% of Chinese users are using locally developed apps where 60% of Americans are using apps developed elsewhere. China has made every attempt to control the technology market and discouraged American tech companies from capture this lucrative market. A market analyst warned: \u201cNon-Chinese developers targeting China market will not stand a chance. There is no way they let foreigners to enter and capture this market. As their economy is slowing down rapidly, they need to keep their jobs for their people and with millions of unemployed graduates they cannot afford to lose this \u201ceconomic miracle\u201d.
