The future is in software<\/p>\n

Last week several big companies gathered in a technology forum to discuss industry trends. Many senior executives took turn to say what the important things to their companies are. As I sat among the audiences and listened to where these companies are planning to do in the near future, it confirmed my belief that the big things in IT are: Mobile, Cloud Computing, and Big Data.<\/p>\n

During the forum, a person from the audience asked: \u201cWhat\u2019s about hardware? You have not even mentioned anything about hardware.\u201d A senior executive answered: \u201cToday hardware is no longer important, its industry is matured and stopped growing. But software is still growing so the future is in software. We need more software as it is one thing that changes everything.\u201d In the discussion that follows, the senior executive explained: \u201cUnless something changes, hardware\u2019s good time is over. If you look at the stock of hardware companies such as Intel, HP, ADM, Texas Instrument etc. it all went down in past years. Foreign hardware companies like Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba, and Sony were having problem. Samsung is doing fine because its smartphone brought in most profits, without it Samsung would be in the same trouble as others. Currently Taiwanese hardware companies are in financial trouble and many could bankrupt soon. Chinese hardware companies are struggled as sale of personal computer (PC) is losing momentum. Basically hardware is no longer the key economic driver. Today everything is about software. The issue with Asian countries is they focus too much on hardware but ignore software that is why many are in big trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to these top executives, the market of mobile application will exploded and change the way people live. The most interesting is where mobile devices and tracking technology are emerging and how they change sales and marketing domain. There are several new mobile applications that track mobile users and determine what they want that sale people could not even imagine few years ago. Today, many retail stores have added software to track mobile users in their stores to gain insight into their customers’ behavior and offer special sales to them. Instead of advertising on newspapers or billboards, these companies are using sophisticated software that go beyond common advertising today. By combine online tracking with mobile movement tracking, retail stores have increased their sales about 30% and increased profits 45% in past year alone. An executive explained: \u201cIf you read advertising on newspapers or visit a store\u2019s website, you may interest in something but maybe you just glancing through without intention to buy. But if you walk into a store and stop to look at certain thing, the chance is you want it. The software who tracks you immediately alerts sale people that someone may want to buy something. Suddenly you become a potential customer and the store does not want to lose the opportunity of making a sale. Their sale marketing software immediately makes offer to you via text message or alerts sale person to approach you. Another software \u201ctext message\u201d will let you know of their competitor\u2019s prices and do a quick comparison to convince you that their price is the best. If you walk out of the store, the software will give you an \u201cultimatum sale price\u201d and let you know that after you buy, if you can find another store that has lower price than you pay within 30 days, they will give you back half of the purchased price. Who can resist a sale like that? That is why many stores are now using software to sell instead of a sale person thus reduces their cost of hiring sale persons and increase their profits.<\/p>\n

Today when you surf the internet, every move, every click is collected by Google so they know more about you and what you want. When you read something online, all the advertising will appear based on your preference. If you look at car websites in the past few days, it seems that you may want to buy a car then the advertising that you see will be mostly about cars. If you search for the word \u201claptops or tablets\u201d in the past few days then what you see on your screen will mostly be advertising about computers and laptops etc. In other word, random advertising is thing of the past, today it is active advertising and this is how Google are making more money. Each time that you see the advertising and click to it, Google are making money with its \u201cPay per click\u201d software. As everything on the Internet reveal a lot about you and what you want and this is the domain of Big Data analytics. The more companies can apply Big Data, the more widespread this technology will become.<\/p>\n

Today almost every company is working on this technology. Everything you put on your Facebook, your LinkedIn, your personal websites, every search, every clicks on the Internet are collected and analyzed for commercial purposes. This is how Google are making so much money on active advertising in recent years. There are many application of this technology in the commercial market. For example, understanding the preferences of younger generation is also an important factor for many automakers. Last year, one of my students analyzes data from a 2011 consumer survey of young people (18 to 28 years old) regarding what they like in a car\u2019s interiors and driver interfacing. He presented his analysis at the North American International Auto conference in Detroit this January. As he explained the importance of a car electronics and connectivity, such as voice-recognition technology and the ability of vehicles to interface with portable electronic devices such as the iPhone, many automaker companies including BMW and Mercedes approached him. They wanted to use his data analysis for their future cars to make sure that their customers will be pleased. He told me: \u201cI got five job offers even I have not graduated yet. One company offered to fly me to Germany immediately after the conference so I can give the same presentation to their executives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today software is \u201cHot\u201d so if you are choosing software as your field of study (Computer Science, Software Engineering or Information System Management) you are making the right decision as this area is still growing. However, it is important for you to keep up with industry trends because today software is NOT code and test but much more. You need to develop skills in mobile application development, cloud computing and Big Data because those are what companies need. According to several studies, the shortage of skilled software people will last for at least another ten years because software technology is still changing and growing fast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
