Since many things are now connected, every manager must have knowledge about Information Technology (IT) and understand how the integration of IT to business can improve efficiency and profits. With rapid growth in global markets, top business schools such as Harvard, Chicago, Yale, and Stanford etc. are requiring business students to take courses in information technology as more companies need competent managers in these skills as they expand to new markets.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is to develop IT knowledgeable business managers who can work effectively anywhere in the world. Although for years existing managers received trainings on technology driven global business but many failed. The reason is their thinking do not changed as they are still using the \u201cOld thinking\u201d rules, policies and methods. Unless their mind set is changing, they will not be effective in this global \u201cconnected world\u201d. Since many managers made mistakes and companies lost a lot of money, the current trend is to develop new managers from the younger generation who grow up with technology. An executive explained: \u201cIt is difficult to change the mind of experienced managers who have been working for a long time and ask them to switch to new thinking with technology as the main driver. Even today many of my managers do not understand globalization or believe that my company is a global company. They do not understand the impact of globalization and technology because they are still working in the same office with the same customers so they do not see the need to change. For many years business theories dictate that experience contributes to the effectiveness of management. However, today experience, while required, is not sufficient for the development of effective managers in this technology driven world. If managers never leave their local office then how can they make decision to something that is thousands miles away? If managers never use technology, how can they know what is happening in another market? How can they make quick decision when the \u201cold thinking\u201d is waiting for someone to write a report to them? Today things happen fast, decisions have to be made quickly else opportunities will be lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s global business, the key to staying competitive is using information technology. In fact, more than 80 percent of companies are increasing investment in technologies such as mobile, big data analytics, cloud computing, and social network. This trend indicates that as information technology is becoming essential part of every business then IT knowledgeable managers are needed for optimal business performance. This puts a lot of pressure on university to develop a new type of business managers for the industry and the preference is the Information System Management (ISM) degree where graduates have both business and technical skills.<\/p>\n<p>A company owner said: \u201cThe new business managers must understand the impact of technology that connects everything and pushing business \u201coutside the walls of the company\u201d\u00a0by expand to new markets. The explosion of ecommerce has moved everything globally with workers spreading all over the world and collaborates with each other via their mobile devices. This requires a new mindset that current experienced managers may not even think about. Today the rise of mobile technology, Big Data, and Cloud computing are challenging global companies to compete for future business growth. The connectivity of mobile devices to the Internet, and to one another has enormous potential to broaden business in ways never seen before, particularly when it comes to marketing, monitoring sales continuously. At the same time, companies can collect and analyzing large amounts of data from connected devices and social media activity, in real time and analyze them for advantages.<\/p>\n<p>For example a retail company can monitor sales across the country, knowing which store do better than others and which merchandises are selling faster and changes the price of certain merchandises to lure more customers to their stores. It also knows its sales, its cost, its profit margin in real time rather have to wait to the end of the week, or month or even year to know how well the company is doing. With technology, all vital information is available in minutes and owners can make decision quickly. Basically what the industry needs is the type of new business managers who can transform companies into technology-ready businesses that can use data analytics to better serve customers needs, improve management and increase profits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With cloud computing, mobile devices, and broadband network, workers can collaborate, coordinate and sharing information easily to take advantage of the open global market. This requires new rules, new laws and strong technical and business management to achieve the best results based on the investment of certain resources. With globalization workers\u2019 attitude is changing. The better educated workers will select fastest growing companies that appreciate their contribution to work for rather than companies that are standing still due to incompetent management systems. The traditional \u201cTop down\u201d management is already obsolete as it creates bureaucracy and could not response fast enough to market changes. Today many companies are \u201cFlatten out their structure\u201d to remove inactive managers in order to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
