Some listen to teachers\u2019 lectures but only do minimum work, just enough to pass the courses. If students are NOT motivated to learn then they are NOT learning much, and probably will fail. Some teachers view unmotivated students as lazy but there are other reasons why students are not motivated, and depending on the cause, teachers may take different approach to motivate them to learn.<\/p>\n<p>The common cause of unmotivated students is that they do NOT have a learning direction. Many do not have a good reason to study anything. Some go to college because their parents want them to go, or because their friends are going, so they see college is only a continuation of the high school. Instead of acquire knowledge and develop skills, they only interest in the degree. With these students, it is important to explain to them about career planning, help them set educational goals. Once they clearly understand their education direction and careers correctly, they will motivate to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Another cause of some unmotivated students is that studying is not a priority in their lives. These students often have issues such as emotional, family or health that are impacting their lives. Because they are preoccupied with more important issues, they seem not motivated to study. If these issues are solved, they can go back and focus on learning. If the problem is too dramatic or difficult to solve, they often quit school. I remember when I was in high school, there was a student who did not pay any attention in class and often get scolded by teachers. The class ridiculed him of being stupid until we learned that both of his parents had serious health problem and he has to take care of his entire family by working full time at night.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason why students are not motivated because they believe that the class is too difficult and they cannot catch up. For these students, I often recommend that they take remedial courses or additional tutorials to rebuild their foundation and their confidence. As they are making progress, teachers should praise them for their efforts. By being recognized and encouraged, they can catch up with the class and eventually motivate to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>There are students who believe that the course material is useless as they are not challenging enough. They often are bright students but do not see a connection between what are taught and what they want to learn. They often think \u201cWhy do I need to know this?\u201d or \u201cI did not find it useful and had no desire to learn about it.\u201d They are not motivated to learn as they find the material is not applicable to their lives. To avoid this situation, it is important to take a few minutes to explain to the class about the reason why they will need to learn certain materials. I often begin the lecture with an outcome in mind: \u201cBy learning this material, you will be able to do \u2026. And when you work as \u2026.position, you will need it to do \u2026..\u201d By clearly explain the reason WHY they need to know something; you can motivate students to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>There is another \u201csensitive\u201d reason why students are not motivated which is caused by the teacher. Some teachers do not interest in teaching and merely put together the basic lecture that they continue to lecture years after years. As students, we all have encountered some classes that were totally boring and even though we wanted to study but we were not motivated because the teacher made the course so boring. Teachers need to take the blame sometimes for their students\u2019 unmotivated. The reality is that teaching and learning is a \u201ctwo-way communication\u201d as when teacher is enthusiast in teaching, students are motivated to learn and both parties involved in the process should share the burden of maintaining motivation at high levels.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, sometime it is important for teachers to change the teaching method. Rather than just lecture, teachers should be asking student\u2019s questions. By allow students to express their own opinions instead of simply memorize facts, you can motivate them to learn more. In this active learning method, you ask questions that do not require right or wrong answer just to get them motivated. For example in the project management class, I may ask: \u201cDo you think Project manager must estimate schedule, costs, and resources for the project by himself? And Why?&#8221; I let students share their answers to initiate a class discussion. When students are interested in the topic by having lively discussion then it is easier for the teacher to start the lesson.<\/p>\n<p>I think media technologies such as short films, video clips are great tools to motivate students to learn. Many teachers considered these tools as distractions as they are still prefer to teach by that lecturing but I found these tools are helpful to motivate students to learn. The key is to use short video clips from documentaries or YouTube at beginning of the class to get students attention and initiate a short class discussion before start the lecture.<\/p>\n<p>To get students motivate I often share with them what is going on in the &#8220;real world&#8221; by ask them to read some \u201ccase studies\u201d or industry news. Students need to know how things are happening, how people solve the problems, how one company is more successful than others and why they are learning about this situation. I found that by relate what students are learning to what is important to them is another better way to motivate them. I think motivation is a desire to achieve some sort of goal. As students know what their goals are, what they can achieve by having certain knowledge and skills than they will be motivated to learn.<\/p>\n<p>There is of course the reality that there are students who genuinely do not care for school and therefore are not motivated. But for the most part, students who are not motivated have some underlying issues that need attention first, and then they can adjust and focus on school. To motivate students to learn is challenging, but it is an important part of teaching.
