Make money<\/p>\n

A\u00a0college student wrote to me: \u201cI want to select a field of study that can help me to make a lot of money. I would do anything to make money. Is there a field of study that could make more money than software engineering or computer science? I have considered selecting business or finance but according to your blog, these fields do not make much money anymore. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: \u201cIt seems to me that you are obsessed with money but you have not realized that money is NOT everything. What will happen if you have a lot of money but not healthy? Can you count money when you are on sick bed? I am not sure about your statement of \u201cdo anything to make money\u201d; does it means you would do something illegal or unethical things too? Can you sleep well at night without personal integrity? Have you ever asked why you are going to college for? If the answer is just to \u201cmake money\u201d than my advice is you should buy lottery ticket instead.<\/p>\n

Nothing disappoints me more than students who told me that they go to college to make money or to get rich. Before you make decision about your field of study, you should ask yourselves whether it is really worth it to go to college just to make money. What will happen after completion and having the degree but you could not make money? What will happen if you cannot even find a job? Who are going to guarantee that by study something you would be rich? Are you going to be depressed? Are you going to blame somebody? Are you being angry with yourself?<\/p>\n

You are going to college to get educated. College education is NOT about teaching you how to make money. College education teaches you to be a responsible person for yourself, for your family, your society, and your country. You acquire knowledge and skills to contribute to your society and at the same time make a good living for you and your family. The goal of education is to develop good citizens with knowledge, virtue, integrity, and humility who can contribute to the development of the society in a positive way.<\/p>\n

Some people believe that money equates to happiness. Without really thinking seriously about it, they may sacrifice their health, their relationships, their family for some money making opportunities that may never come. When they are driven by material things, they are giving up precious things such as time that they could spend with their family, their love ones, and their friends. Only when their health deteriorates, they may realize that they have been chasing an illusion but by that time it is too late.<\/p>\n

Money is only a tool to assist you to achieve something but it is not the source of your happiness and definitely not the goal of education. As college students, you must focus on being a responsible person first, as you learn more and think deep, you will suddenly find that money is not as important as you think it was.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
