A college student wrote to me: \u201cWhat type of job that I can get with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Information System Management (ISM)? How much can I make and what is the career path of this degree? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: The most popular career of ISM graduates is Computer Systems Analyst, which using both your technical skills and your knowledge about the business world. In this job, you are responsible for determining how the computer system is serving the needs of the company, and what can be done to make those systems more effective. System analysts work closely with business managers to determine what system upgrades is needed and what technologies are available that could increase the company’s efficiency. Systems analysts may work with network managers and software engineers to design and develop new computer systems, train users and configure\u00a0hardware and software as needed. The type of computer system that system analysts work with will depend upon the needs of the company business.<\/p>\n

Most computer systems analyst jobs require a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Information System Management (ISM) because it needs knowledge of both business and technical, although it does not go into much technical details like in Computer Science or Software Engineer. Systems analysts need to constantly keep themselves up-to-date on the latest technology because computer technology often changes. For example, today cloud computing, mobile technologies are changing the business world quickly so a system analyst must understand cloud computing, system security, and mobile technology.<\/p>\n

To get a good job as system analyst, graduates may need some working experiences although it may not be necessary in a software company. While having an ISM degree is required but be able to applying your skills on the job through an internship or other employment will make you look better on your resume and could lead to better career opportunities.<\/p>\n

The demand for computer systems analysts is very strong as more companies are applying information technology to automate their business processes and improve efficiency. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this field is expected to grow faster than average between 2010 and 2020. On average, computer systems analysts earn approximately $89,000 per year (2012 data). While your position will depend a great deal on the skills you have and the work that you do but after few years, a system analyst can move up to computer system manager position, director of information technology position, and eventually to Chief Information Officer (CIO).
