Unemployment graduates<\/p>\n

I just read a report on unemployed college graduates in Asia (China, India, Malaysia etc.) where there are over 18 million graduates who could not find work. The report reveals that 94% of them are still living with their parents or will be returning home to live with their parents.\u00a0The situation of college graduates after spending most of their family\u2019s saving money but still need parents\u2019 supports is very sad. According to the report, most graduates have applied for hundreds of jobs but could not get offer because they did not have the appropriated skills. Eventually some will have to work in jobs that have nothing to do with their education. Others, who are so desperate, will do anything, including crimes or illegal activities, just to get out of unemployment. Few are so depressed and committed suicide. Some will continue to stay in school for advanced degrees and hope to get better chances in the future but they will only adding to a large number of unemployed graduates with Master and PhD degrees. Only a few have found jobs appropriate to their qualifications, and based on the report, most of them are graduates in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.<\/p>\n

Although the report is mostly about data and statistics, but I read it that as a human tragedy. Especially when there are hundred thousand jobs opening all over the world but could not find qualified workers. Last summer when teaching in China, I talked to several unemployed graduates and found that they did not have a career plan or education goals. A graduate said: “No one told me about Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). We never heard of career planning. Among students, no one know anything about industry trends or global needs, as we are told to go to school, study hard, get degree than everything will be fine. I wish I know more about the technology trends. I wish that I can go back in time and study science or technology so I do not end up in unemployment like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another student said: \u201cWe were not given any advice on selecting the field of study. I did not know anything about Information Technology (IT). I wish that I could learn more about it and perhaps study Computer Science. I have friends who after graduated are now working for Microsoft and Google in Beijing and they are doing very well. I feel like I missed a good opportunity because I did not know much about industry trends, or market trends.\u201d<\/p>\n

A student added: \u201cI felt bad after graduated because I did not know what I really wanted so I just followed my friends. What I have found are most of them also did not know what they want; they just appear as if they do. We all follow each other and somebody said that banking and finance were where we can make a lot of money then everyone rushed in to study banking and finance without any knowledge about the global economic recession. We just follow something blindly and that is why we all unemployed.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the student cannot be blame for their lack of direction because many universities are NOT offering fields of study that the market needs and some school training programs are of low quality and produce graduates who cannot meet the requirements of companies.\u00a0A graduate said: \u201cThe problem is our education system emphasizes only on passing exams and on obtains degree. Parents push their children to get degree but do not know about market needs. Society considers degree as a goal but not pay attention to skills. Students focus on passing exam to get degree but have no idea that today degree is no longer a guarantee for jobs. School is not helping students to get job but only concerns about filling classrooms. Teachers do not learn new things so their knowledge is obsolete. Just because somebody\u00a0has an advanced degree does not mean that he is capable of teaching.\u00a0Teaching is much more than giving lectures or hand out exams.\u00a0To teach you need to have a broad range of current knowledge. Not only from textbooks that you have read when you go to university but you have to be in alignment with the growing knowledge and technology changes.\u00a0Thirty years ago somebody achieved a PhD degree but for 30 years he has not bothered about what has happened in his field.\u00a0In the past 30 years human knowledge has increased more than all knowledge that has been accumulated in the past 3,000 years. But teachers who have not learning anything new in these 30 years are still teaching. That is why so many graduates are unemployed because they have no skills that companies need.<\/p>\n

A graduate concluded: \u201cPeople do not know how we feel after apply for so many jobs but face repeated rejection?\u201d Another added: \u201cWith so many rejections, we lost all of our confidence and have wondered if we ever join the employment world?\u201d To these graduates, having a job is not just about having money, it is about having a sense of competence, about having value, about self-worth, about contributing and be part of the society. Without that, many are hurt and without proper action, the society will have a \u201cdamaged generation\u201d as many will be unemployed for a long time and this is a terrible human cost.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
