Learning from Failures<\/p>\n

Asian education systems have many exams to select few outstanding students only. Therefore when students fail, they are eliminated from their education so the goal of students is to pass exams. A typical college graduates have to pass many exams without fail because the system does not allow for failure. Being able to pass exams does NOT teach them how to learn from failures. Since they never fail, many do not know what to do when they fail in lives.<\/p>\n

Asian students have learned from a very young age to avoid failure but life is NOT that simple. Since they never learn from failures, they do not have the skills or the courage to make up for their deficiencies. Every year, many Asian students commit suicide after they fail exams, the number has reached several thousands in China, Japan, and S. Korea as these students considered themselves hopeless and shameful. In western countries, you never hear of something like that as students must learn from failures at a very young age. Thirty years ago when my son was 8 years old, I took him to soccer practice in his elementary school. He did not do well and did not get selected to the team. He cried and as a father, I consoled him but his coach told me: \u201cWhy are you doing that? He must learn to accept failure and overcome it by himself.\u201d He told my son: \u201cYou did not get selected to this team because you are not good enough but there will be another team forming next month, be prepared for it.\u201d The second time, he did not get selected either but this time, the eight years old did not cry as he knew there will be another team formed in few months. He went home and practiced his soccer kicking every day until he got selected to the team. He learned how to improve his skills from previous failures.<\/p>\n

By recognizing your failures, you understand your strengths and your weaknesses then eventually yourself. By consider each failure as a learning experience; you can make failure into a positive experience. Of course, no one wants to fail, but by turning failure into a learning opportunity, you can reduce the suffering of failure and learn how to overcome it. Since most people are afraid of failure by avoiding risks, you have an advantage over them by willing to learn from your mistakes and ready to overcome them. The fear of failure is the reason many people do not try to advance in their career; do not want to learn something new; do not have career goals; do not want to take risk, and do not want to change. By recognizing that failure is part of learning, you are developing a positive attitude toward failure, which encourages you to be willing to change; willing to take risk; willing to learn something new; willing to advance your career; willing to set goals for your life and that will contribute to your success.<\/p>\n

As students, you are still learning so set aside the time to recognize all of your failures. You need to understand your strengths and your weaknesses and take actions to improve your knowledge and skills. Develop a personal habit by set aside few minutes each day before going to bed to reflect on what went wrong and how you could have handled the situation differently. By doing this you will be able to improve your character and mature in a way that set you apart from the average students. By improving your attitude, you can turn today failures into future successes. In life, failures are common but you have a choice on what to do. You can let it destroy you or use it as a learning opportunity to make yourself stronger and be a better person than before.
