Mobile technology is increasingly become a necessity all over the world. A Wall Street analyst declared: \u201cWherever the phone signals can reach, there is a new way to do business and make money. Mobile business is growing faster and bigger in Africa, South America and Asia than the U.S and Europe. Soon new mobile millionaires and billionaires will bypass the \u201cold technology\u201d billionaires like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. The chance to make money is no longer in the \u201cold technology\u201d such as PC software or hardware but in mobile apps and smartphone. The richest person on earth is no longer Bill Gates but Carlos Slim who build his business in mobile phone. Among the new billionaires this year, several are coming from the mobile apps and telecommunication business.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last year smartphones like Apple\u2019s iPhone or Samsung\u2019s Galaxy phone are priced at several hundred dollars, which many people could not afford. This year there are several \u201cunknown brands\u201d smartphones on the market. Most came from China, India, Malaysia and Africa, selling for much less than Apple and Samsung phones and they are quickly gaining market share in Africa and South America. Many are selling for a fraction of a price of an iPhone. Due to the lower prices and the popular of these smartphones, the entire mobile market is changing rapidly with thousands of new applications designed to meet the need of the local market.<\/p>\n
For example, it is easier to pay\u00a0for a taxi ride using mobile phone in Nairobi, Kenya than in New York. Many Kenya\u2019s mobile phone companies are now moving into mobile-money business. Safaricom, the largest mobile phone company in Kenya launched a mobile application called M-PESA to let people pay everything by phone instead of cash. It is so popular that within three years, it is used by over two-thirds of Kenya population for every transaction. People do not carry cash anymore but pay everything by their mobile phones.<\/p>\n
The concept is simple, instead of put money in a Bank; the phone company becomes their Bank. When people have a smartphone from Safaricom, they can deposit money into their account by go to a \u201cSafaricom agent\u201d, usually the owner of a small retail stores located throughout the country (Note: there are over 45,000 stores associated with Safaricom) who deposit the money into a phone money account just like when they buy minutes to add to their phone account. People go to a store, buy things and pay by the mobile phone account. The store checks the phone account and accepts payment. If people need cash, they can go to a store, which checks that they have sufficient money in the account before debiting their account and give them cash. People can transfer money to others using a menu on their phone. Money can be sent from one place to another quickly, safely than taking money with them as they travel in rural or remote areas. This is particularly useful in a country where many workers in cities send money back home to their families in rural villages. Since Telecommunication Company becomes a bank, their profit soared significantly. Today 30% of the country\u2019s gross national product (GDP) flows through mobile transactions NOT banks and M-PESA is by far the most successful mobile apps on earth.<\/p>\n
By using innovation technology, this Kenya telecommunication company has eliminated the entire banking system which has exceptionally high transaction cost of handling money. With tradition banking system, people has to go through a physical Bank to deposit money; and receivers who live in remote villages have to go to places where there are banks to get the money and pay the cost of transaction where the bank will take a small percentage of the amount. With mobile automation, money can be sent and received within seconds with no transaction fees. With this efficient money transfer system, everybody can send and receive money quickly. Today most Kenyan believe that their phone accounts are much safer than a Bank accounts as in past years, some Banks have bankrupted due to the slowdown in economy and few Bank owners have disappeared oversea with their money. During the election violence in 2008, M-PESA was used to transfer money to people trapped inside Nairobi during the fighting among several factions in ethnic disputes. Having established a strong base of users, M-PESA are now growing bigger with more people sign up to Safaricom system.<\/p>\n
Today M-PESA has been extended to disburse salaries and pay bills, which saves users more time. Companies can pay workers directly into their phone accounts so they do not have to waste time waiting in long line at the bank. The popular of phone payment system in Kenya begin to spread to nearby countries as Safaricom also expanding to other African countries and even to Afghanistan and India. A Wall Street analyst said that this telecommunication company could become one of the largest telecommunication AND bank in many African and Asia countries soon.<\/p>\n
With more smartphone users, the ability to communicate from distance between patients and doctors is no longer a luxury but more common. With mobile technology, the face to face video communication has evolved from something that unheard of ten years ago into a reality in recent years. With \u201cTele-medicine\u201d application, patients who live in remote areas can receive timely needed healthcare via low cost video communication such as Skype and other video applications.\u00a0 With additional plug-in devices, a doctor can check for infections in the ears, eyes, mouth of patients and measure their pulses, blood pressures to diagnose diseases or even provide consultation during the birth of a baby remotely.<\/p>\n
Mobile technology with camera has become a crucial element for providing quality medical care to large, rural and remote areas. Before mobile phone, it is difficult to assess the conditions of patients in these areas. Now doctor can use video communication to determine whether a patient needs to be transferred to a hospital or not. All over Africa, there is a dramatic rise in the use of mobile technology in healthcare and the most popular is video consultation, where doctors can visit patients remotely via a video communication using mobile phone or laptops. According to a government report, each year there are over two million consultations are done via mobile phone since 2010 and the number is increasing fast. Due to these low cost, easily done applications, many patients are able to access healthcare regardless where they live.<\/p>\n
