An industry analyst comments: \u201cIn traditional industries such as finance, business, and manufacturing, it is difficult for women to advance to the top positions but in fast growing technology industry, women are doing better and many are successful. If more women are studying technology, they could dominate this industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to an industry report, the number of women-owned companies in the U.S. has increased 26 percent between 2000 and 2010. There were 8.2 million companies owned by women and among them 8% was in technology. For years, traditional women-own businesses were mostly in personal cares (Beauty shops, Hair cares and Laundry services), foods (Restaurants, Bakery, Catering services) or small retails. Today having thousands of technology companies owned and managed by women is quite a significant change.<\/p>\n<p>People often wonder whether technology area is a good match for women but data from industry indicates that women are doing better in technology than men, especially in ownership and management. The report\u2019s authors interviewed over six hundreds women and men who work in technology industry. Following are what they found:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are better than men in managing people. They are more empathic than men and can build strong relationships that are effective in managing technical people. Because technical workers are highly educated, they do not like to be ordered. But managers who are men often give order on what to do when women managers often communicate by encouragement instead of order. That explains why many women-owned companies do not have problems with employees switch jobs as with men-owned technology company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are better than men in listening skills. They use their intuition to know when to stop talking and just listen to the customers. Being able to listen allows them to understand customers\u2019 needs and they remember them well. Basically women never forget anything, even small details. Most men do not listen well as they think they already know everything. They do not pay much attention to customers\u2019 comments and often missed many details. In technology business, it is the detail that determines success and failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen have the \u201cintuition\u201d to quickly determine friends and enemies and are not afraid to base decisions on just a \u201cfeeling\u201d while men make decision based on \u201cFacts\u201d and often overlook other factors. In technology business, competition is fierce, even small mistake can lead to disastrous consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen have the ability to do several things at the same time (multi-tasking). They can easily talk on the phone, respond to email, write document, all at the same time with effectiveness. Most men can only do one thing at a time and cannot cope with so many changes happen at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are willing to learn new things and more flexible when changes are needed. Men are arrogant as they think that they already know everything, they do not like to learn new things or keep up with changes. That is why many men-owned companies have difficulty when new technology emerges or market changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen enjoy teamwork while men prefer to work alone. Women owners often seek out advice and help each other while men tend to solve problems by themselves, do not ask for help and often make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs company owners, women have more patience and are willing to wait longer for the business to grow. In contrast, men often make decision in a hurry, do not want to wait and often do not think clearly about consequences. Since they often make more mistakes, their companies often fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly women have better competitive edge in business, especially in startups when the risks are high. Women are passionate and self-motivated when they start their company, they are willing to build better relationship with customers and they are successful in technology startups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authors concluded: \u201cWomen are great company owners and have proven themselves to be responsive technology entrepreneurs.
