I have received several emails from college graduates asking about the opportunity to work in the U.S. for companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple or Facebook etc. As graduates with a degree in software engineering, computer science, or information system management, the chance is very good that many U.S. companies need your skills but there are few things that you need to answer to determine your qualifications.<\/p>\n

The first thing is about the reputation of your university and the training program. Do these global software companies that you want to apply know about your university and the training program? Is your training program accredited by an International standard or U.S. Standards such as ABET? Is there a relationship between your university and other universities in the U.S.? Do these companies have office in your country? Have their people actively recruited students from your university? If the answer is \u201cYes\u201d then you meet the qualification requirement category. In this case, you may contact their office in your country to inquire about job opening opportunity. When filling application, you need to follow the instructions and clearly put your university, degree, skills and any experience that you have. Any software work or project experience is helpful, including capstone project. I know that both Google and Microsoft are very active in recruiting software graduates from China, India, and Singapore etc. Each year, they hire about several hundreds to thousands graduates there. If your application is selected, the next step is having a job interview, usually via the phone or \u201cSkype.\u201d<\/p>\n

The second thing is about your English language skills. Nobody would hire you if you cannot speak their language. You must have excellent English in speaking, listening, and writing and must be able to communicate well with English speaking people. Without excellent language skill, you will NOT even pass their first interview; usually conduct over the phone by people in their human resource department. A typical interview in these software companies consists of three phases: Interview with Human Resource people to determine your qualification for the job; interview with technical people to identify your knowledge and skills; and interview with hiring managers to determine whether you \u201cFit\u201d in their working environment. Passing all three interview means you will get the job that you want.<\/p>\n

As I have written many times in this blog, your degree is only the key to open the door of opportunity. To get the job, you must have both knowledge and skills and the second interview with a team of technical developers will determine how knowledgeable you are. They often give you several small problems to solve, each may require you to code, design, and answer technical questions. Most of the questions are related to the position that you are applying and the area that they think you will be working at their company. For example, if you are applying for a tester position, the question would be focus more on testing and coding.<\/p>\n

If you meet all requirements and pass these interviews you will get hired. The company will work with you to obtain a work authorization visa (H1B) from the U.S. government. Generally people cannot get permission to work without a company who are hiring them for a specific job. Since you have the needed skills that are in critical shortage, it is often a matter of few months before you get your permission to work. This H1B visa allows you to work in the U.S. for a period of three years with an extension for three more years, or a total of six years.<\/p>\n

Contradict to many false rumors about low salary, if you are hired, your salary and benefits would be the same with every worker in the company.
