Two top CMU faculties to lead Microsoft’s research<\/p>\n

Microsoft is making a massive overhaul to strengthen the company to make it moving faster and more efficient. Among the major change are the new leaderships at Microsoft Research Group.\u00a0Microsoft Research focuses on basic research, separate from the company\u2019s main product groups. The technologies it develops often make their way into the company\u2019s products, but the company has been under pressure at times to tighten the connections between research and product groups, to get the researchers\u2019 ideas to market faster.<\/p>\n

Microsoft says vice president Peter Lee, a former chairman of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon, who previously led Microsoft Research USA, will be promoted to the president of Microsoft Research worldwide. Jeannette Wing, also a former chairman of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon who joined Microsoft earlier this year, will be promoted to vice president of Microsoft Research to oversee all Microsoft\u2019s core research labs around the world .<\/p>\n

The Chief Executive of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer\u2019s wrote in his email to employees: \u201cMicrosoft Research is an invaluable strategic asset to our company. As we move forward, we need best-in-class capability to look ahead and adapt to change.
