Asking Questions<\/p>\n

After posting the article: \u201cActive learning with questions\u201d, I received an email from a teacher in which he wrote: \u201cIt is easy to ask students to tell you what they have learned if you teach history, literature or business because there are some facts to say but I am teaching math and those questions does not get much response from students. Are there other questions?\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: The reason you ask questions is to start a class discussion and for students to tell you their understanding of what you have taught. What you do NOT want is for students to repeat what you have said but they should answer based in their own word with their own logic. Of course, there are other questions that teachers can ask, not necessary the same \u201cWhat have you learned today\u201d question.<\/p>\n

I also ask \u201cWhy and How\u201d questions to encourage students to discuss their understanding at deeper levels. The reason is when students hear a right answer they tend to memorize it and think that is all they need to know. So I ask \u201cWhy do you think that is the right answer?\u201d to challenge them. I want them to know that knowing the right answer is NOT enough but they must be able to explain WHY it is right. Sometime I ask \u201cWhy does this algorithm work in this case but not in others? to force students to think deeper than just knowing the correct algorithms to implement a solution. Or to understand their thinking, I would ask \u201cHow do you come up with that answer?\u201d \u201cExplain to me step by step on how do you come up with the answer?\u201d<\/p>\n

I believe that each students must also learn to ask each other the \u201cWhy\u201d and \u201cHow\u201d questions during their teamwork or class discussion to make their learning more meaningful.
