Active learning with questions<\/p>\n

A young professor wrote to me: \u201cI like the active learning approach that you advocated but how do I motivate students to actively learn something in my class? Please advice.<\/p>\n

Answer: There are several techniques to motivate students but following is one technique that I often use. To motivate students to learn something, I often ask them question such as “What are you learning in my class today?” I ask them before AND after each class as a reminder that they go to class to learn something. I want them to tell me about their learning as part of a communication exchange between teacher and students. Of course, I do not accept answer like \u201cNothing\u201d or a complete silence in the class as it means they do not care about learning.<\/p>\n

I begin the class with that question then give them a short description of what I am going to teach on that day. For example: \u201cToday we are going to learn about Binary tree, does anybody know what it is?\u201d At the end of the class, I ask the same question again: \u201cWhat have we learned in class today?\u201d This time I want the answer from students. I want them to tell me what they have learned in the class. I may ask a student to summarize it for the class as a reminder of things that they have learned. Sometime I may also ask about what they have learned in the previous class: “What did you learn from the previous class, is there anyone who could tell me about it?\u201d By constantly repeat this type of question I give the class a clear message about what they need to learn.<\/p>\n

Some teachers give two or three tests each semester and often do not like to review materials before a test. They expect students to be prepared for it. I always give Bi-weekly test and conduct review session before AND after each test in my class. I begin with question: “What do you think will be on the test next week?” I allow students to guess and have them answer that question. For example, a student may say: \u201cI think you will ask us about binary tree.\u201d Then I ask: \u201cIf I ask about binary tree then what kind of question would I ask or what kind of problem that you must solve for a binary tree structure?\u201d If they learn something about binary tree, they must know the answer. By having them keep on guessing and answering, they are actively reviewing what they have learned.<\/p>\n

If students know what they will learn and what I will teach each day, it will help them to clarify their learning objective. If they know what I will ask them in the test then they know what to study for and it motivates them to learn more. By listening to their guessing and answering, I know what they know and what they do not know well so I can explain to them again about what they need to learn. After the test review, I prepare the test based on what we have discussed in class.<\/p>\n

Immediately after the test, I conduct another review by asking: \u201cWhat is the most difficult question in this test?\u201d By doing that, I remind them on what they have missed so they will recall what they have learned or not learned well. As students tell me which questions that they find difficulty, I will explain to them about the correct answers so they have another chance to learn it. To me, the Bi-weekly test is just another review to make sure that they all learn the materials well. The test is just a measure of their learning progress and a motivating activity for them to want to learn more.<\/p>\n

When I taught in Asia, some professors disagreed with this method. They said I were \u201cCheating\u201d because I told students what I will put on the test since many students were doing very well in my course. I asked them: \u201cWhat is the purpose of an education? Do we want students to learn something or do we want to eliminate them? What is the purpose of a test? In the ancient time, a test is designed to eliminate most people in order to select a few to serve the emperor. That concept is obsolete already. Today education is NOT for a few elites but for everybody. Today education is a driver for economy and it needs to develop more knowledgeable people. With active learning, the test is only a measurement of students\u2019 progress as they are learning. An educator\u2019s job is to help them, encourage them, and motivate them to learn more. We need to put more efforts in supporting students to build a strong foundation and continue to learn new things as technology changes fast. By threatening them with tests, by putting pressure on them, by eliminate them, we are discouraging students to learn and make testing into something that students fear. If they are afraid of learning, they will never adopt a lifelong learning and learning often ends when they graduate from school.
