Universities<\/p>\n

Last month, I had a conversation with a friend who is a university professor about how a university should allocate its government funding. He said first priority is to build more dormitories, then improving the libraries with more books, finally to class rooms. His point was that students need places to live, and learn from each other. Libraries are better than classrooms because, they provide students with knowledges which always outweigh the knowledge transmitted in the class rooms.<\/p>\n

I agreed with him in principle but also reminded him that we are living in the computer age where so many things can happen without a physical aspect such as dormitories or books, especially in the knowledge transferring area. Here are my arguments:<\/p>\n

The primary goal of university is to broaden, deepen, and improve the learning among students but the system should not be looked upon simply as a physical meeting place to provide lectures. Today students have access to all kind of knowledge via the internet and they can learn a lot more in this virtual world.<\/p>\n

The secondary goal of the university is to provide access to the accumulated knowledge as represented by the libraries but it does not necessary means more books. I think libraries should provide more computer access because today, students can get information via on-line books and many information sources via the internet.<\/p>\n

The third goal of university is to facilitate teacher-student relationship for knowledge transferring but there is a better way of teaching not necessary the traditional lecturing in classroom (That exists for thousand of years). Classroom should not be a place where teachers lecture and student just sit and listen but it must be a place for discussion on particular subject \u2013 Students should not be passively receivers of what teacher said but both teachers and student must participate in the learning process.\u00a0 Today curriculum must devote to the higher learning purposes of inspiration and encouragement not memorization and rote-learning.<\/p>\n

That is why I strongly believe that we need a new education system that utilizes technology to promote better learning. The concepts of electronic mail, data bases, and information retrieval should be used in this new education system. Electronic mail will change the way we communicate with each others. Like the telephone it allows immediate communication over long distances. So it is possible for a teacher in one city to teach students in different cities. By allowing communication to be electronic mail increases the number and kinds of conversations a person can have. Today, it is possible for a class room discussion to be carried out through electronic means (Teleconferences, Video on demand, Web lecture). There are so many bulletin board discussions exist in the internet today where teachers and students can create a group that exchanges messages on chosen topics throughout the semester. In this case, people have more time to think about what they are saying; indeed they are forced to because they must type it in a computer. When a teacher wishes to base grading on class room discussion he has a written record of who actually said what.<\/p>\n

An electronic mail system is merely a distributed data base system. The entire curriculum can be stored in the main database where students retrieve coursework that they enroll in. The concept of a growing data base will greatly amplify the learning aspect because year after year, the university can capture all the written communication associated with a course — assignments, tests, papers, etc. — the potential exists to change the nature of how people learn the body of material. It will no longer be just the nominal teacher of the course who does the teaching; it will be generations of unseen students transmitting their solutions to problems and views on issues. This huge potential can be realized and facilitate more discussion, more learning for all participants. These possibilities for this kind of learning do not end with lectures, pictures, and sound but it is only a new way of learning we have just begun to explore. The sender of a message actually creates an interactive mechanism that the receiver can interact with to comprehend. The quality of communication will be greatly enhanced by feedback to the senders. The exchange of information is what learning is all about, open communication on selected topics. This kind of learning is much better than the passive boring lectures that we see in many universities today. At its heart, the new education system is a distributed data base. Major sources of information will be the various departments and functions of the university, and one would expect the repositories for their information to be physically distributed and continuously updated.<\/p>\n

In my view, the computer age is already here and what we need is to allow students to take advantage of this tool to get access to information that can help them to facilitate their learning in a productive ways. So instead of building more dormitories, buying more books we should invest more into computer access, computer training and create a new education system on-line so everybody can benefit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
