Khi th\u1ea7y gi\u00e1o kh\u00f4ng b\u00e0y t\u1ecf m\u1ed1i quan t\u00e2m c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd v\u1edbi h\u1ecdc sinh, h\u1ecdc sinh c\u0169ng kh\u00f4ng chia s\u1ebb t\u00ecnh c\u1ea3m c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd v\u1edbi vi\u1ec7c h\u1ecdc. Khi h\u1ecdc sinh kh\u00f4ng th\u00edch th\u1ea7y gi\u00e1o, h\u1ecd ph\u1ea7n nhi\u1ec1u s\u1eb5n l\u00f2ng ph\u00e1 l\u1edbp v\u00e0 l\u00e0m cho vi\u1ec7c h\u1ecdc th\u00e0nh kh\u00f3 kh\u0103n h\u01a1n cho m\u1ecdi ng\u01b0\u1eddi.<\/p>\n<p>Trong nhi\u1ec1u n\u0103m gi\u1ea3ng d\u1ea1y, t\u00f4i th\u1ea5y r\u1eb1ng trong m\u1ecdi l\u1edbp c\u00f3 10% h\u1ecdc sinh kh\u00f4ng c\u1ea7n s\u1ef1 gi\u00fap \u0111\u1ee1 n\u00e0o. T\u00e2m tr\u00ed c\u1ee7a h\u1ecdc sinh l\u00e0 c\u00e1i g\u00ec \u0111\u00f3 mong m\u1ecfi h\u1ecdc v\u00e0 th\u0103m d\u00f2 nh\u1eefng \u0111i\u1ec1u m\u1edbi v\u00e0 ch\u00ednh vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m c\u1ee7a ch\u00fang ta l\u00e0 m\u1edf n\u00f3 ra v\u1edbi s\u1ef1 c\u1ed1ng hi\u1ebfn v\u00e0 ch\u0103m s\u00f3c.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-English version&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The personal aspect of teaching<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most teachers are trained on the instructional aspects such as preparing lectures and course materials to meet educational goals; they want their teachings to be effective. Although these instructional aspects are important, but there is another aspect that needs to be considered: The \u201cpersonal aspects\u201d of teaching.<\/p>\n<p>All students want teachers who care, who understand their feelings. Of course, teachers do care about students but they express that through their devotion to the instructional aspects. They come to class ready to teach, they devote a lot of time to prepare instruction materials, they spend many late nights grading students\u2019 tests. These devotions to teaching means that they care a lot but often students do not think of it as caring. Most students told me that they prefer \u201cpersonal aspects\u201d such as caring, encouragement, acknowledgement, and motivation more.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, many teachers are reluctant to express personal care for students because they must maintain a professional boundary between teachers and students. They limit their connection with students by enforcing classroom policies in consistent with the way education has been established for thousand years which is respect of authority in the classroom. Since I taught in several countries, I observed that most Asian teachers tend to be strict and control their emotion more than western teachers who tend to be friendly and engaged. When I discussed with Asian teachers, many told me that: \u201cMy job is to teach, not to care.\u201d They believed caring means less rigor or lowers standards. Many thought that caring means being nice and easy with students, never pushing students to study hard. I explained to them that caring is part of the instructional role as students would benefit enormously when they do. When teachers fail to express their concern for students, students also do not share their feeling toward learning. When students do not like teachers, they are much more willing to disrupt the class and make learning more difficult for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>For many years of teaching, I found that in every class there are 10% of students who do not need any help. These students know what they want and teachers do not have to do anything because they are always the top students. There are another 10% of students who may not belong in the class. These students have no motivation to learn anything; they are there only temporarily but ready to quit school for whatever reason, and probably nothing teachers can do differently. However there is the rest or 80% of students who may experience some difficulties and need helps; not just instructional helps but also personal care that encourages them, motivates them, and gives them the confidence to succeed. As teachers, we must focus on these students because with little \u201cpersonal care\u201d we can make the difference in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that very well because I was one of those students. In high school I was not very good with mathematics, I was afraid of math more than scared of ghosts. I always had the lowest math score in class. In elementary school, I was told that I was \u201cStupid\u201d because I could not memorize the multiplication table. Since then I did not like numbers or any calculation. A High school teacher noticed that and began to help me by gave me additional exercises to do after class. She said: \u201cYou can do that, it is your mind not your talent. I know you have talent.\u201d At first, I did not agree with her but I had to do extra works because she knew my mother. However she kept telling me that I had talent and logical brain and eventually I believe it. My grade improved and I did not have problems with math and science anymore. Few years ago, I went back to visit her as I wanted to thank her for what she did. She still remembered me after all those years as she said: \u201cI knew that you have talent.\u201d It was her strong belief in all of her students; I am sure there were many students like me that were shaped by her too. It was her personal caring, motivating, encouraging that made the difference in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>As teachers, I believe we have to do both instructional aspect and personal aspect. We want to give students the best instructional possible but we must also express that we do care for their learning because that is our job, that is our role as we are choosing this career.
