A friend asked me about the job opportunity for his son who will graduate in July. He wanted to know what I am looking for when I hire software people to work in my company.<\/p>\n

I told him that beside the general knowledge that student learn in school, I am looking for people who could apply business knowledge into their work. The desirable people should understand all aspects of business to identify strengths and weaknesses, anticipating opportunities and risks, and identifying issues. They should understand customers\u2019 needs and be able to build good relationships with customers by taking action to meet their demands. They should be able to communicate information and share ideas with others in a manner that engages them and helps them understand the key message. They should be able to utilize different tools to write proposal papers, user guides, reports, presentations. They should have the ability to determine the process to be used to accomplish business goals, know how to organize activities, understand how to separate tasks into efficient work flow, and identify opportunities for integration. They should have ability to collect, organize, and analyze data and making recommendations. They should have the leadership ability to lead project team through all phases of product development.<\/p>\n

My friend thought about this for a long time and asked: \u201cHow do you expect a graduate student to have those skills? Where do they receive those training?\u201d<\/p>\n

I answered: I know universities do not teach those skills but a good student should understand that to get the best job that pay high salary they must learn all these basic skills by self-study, by reading books, by taking additional courses outside the universities to improve themselves. Successful people do not rely on what the school teach them but set goal for themselves and learn from wherever they can. When I interview students, I did not ask them what they learned in schools because I already know the school curriculum but I always ask them what kind of book that they read in the past few years, what kinds of person they want to become, what kind of skills they want to have and what are their goals in life. Based on these answers, I can determine if they are the right people that I want to hire for my company.<\/p>\n

My friend shook his head: \u201cDon\u2019t you think that you are asking a lot?\u201d<\/p>\n

I answered: \u201cNo, I do not think so and most managers will do the same. We are living in a highly competitive world where the success of a company depends on the talents it has. You probably know that the birthrate in most developed countries has declined significantly and the number of students attending universities is also declining rapidly so all developed countries are experiencing critical shortage of skilled people. Today many governments have issued immigration laws that allow a large number of highly skilled people to migrate and work in their countries. Each year, several million people from developing world take advantages of these laws to come and work in developed countries. Today people do not work within a national boundary anymore but go where there are job opportunities. There are hundred thousands people who want to work and they all have skills, everybody is competing for the best jobs, the best careers, the highest paid positions. According to the latest economic report, today the world needs hundred thousands software engineers but within the next five years, the shortage will come to several million. Even large population countries like China and India can not produce enough software engineers to meet their own demands so competition will be fierce in the next few years.<\/p>\n

My friend seemed surprised: \u201cBut we have a lot of graduated students that could not find jobs, how could it be when there are so many opportunities\u201d<\/p>\n

I answered: If you look carefully into this situation you will see that there is NOT a shortage of people but significant shortage of skilled people, especially in the high technology area. Today many universities do not teach what the industry needs but only what the professors know and most of them believe that they have an obligation to teach students what they think is important to know. However, the technology changes very fast and every company must adjust their business to meet the pace of change. If you are not moving forward then you are moving backward, the same will also apply to the education system. Education has always been considered to be a process where some essential knowledge is transmitted to students; schools are places where that transmission officially takes place but the development of flexible curriculum to meet industry demand is not the primary consideration. I believe there is a need to improve the education system because students will learn best when they are pursuing career goals that they really care about and they will work hard to achieve those goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
