Teacher<\/p>\n

To be successful in business, you must know what your customers wants, and give them what they wants, after all customers pay you for the business. The same thing could be said for management. Instead of studying all the theories or checking out all the books about management, you could simply ask your people what kind of management works for them then give them what they wish. After all, your success depends on their performance.<\/p>\n

Over the years, I’ve asked my students and my employees what kinds of things they need from me by using a simple technique:\u00a0 I asked people to list their favorite teachers and write down what made those people their favorites. Even though my students or employees may have doubted themselves about their capabilities, their favorite teachers never did. They always encouraged them and gave them confidence by saying “You can do it.”<\/p>\n

Several years ago, my high school teacher also did it for me.\u00a0 She encouraged me when I really needed it.\u00a0 At that time I was not very good in mathematics and did not like numbers. I preferred literature and spent time\u00a0 on novels rather than studied math. But Mrs. Le got me involved in math by encouraged me to work more on math exercises and she mentored me before and after school so I could do well.\u00a0 Somehow she knew that competence precedes confidence and the better I do on math exams, the stronger confidence I felt. That was 1964, and I never dream that I would end up becoming a senior math scientist at the most prestigious U.S university and making my living
\nas a Chief Engineer of a large aerospace company.<\/p>\n

Last year, I had a chance to come back to Vietnam and I wanted to find Mrs. Le to tell her how her belief in me changed my life.\u00a0 So after contacted few old friends I found her address. I came to see her and did not think that she would remember me; after all it was over 40 years. I was wrong, she remembered me. She was over 70 but still remembered her students.\u00a0 She said “What a joy to see you again. I know you can do it well. Thank you so much for remember me after so many years.”<\/p>\n

The lesson is clear, if you want to bring out the best in others, you’ve got to BELIEVE in them.<\/p>\n

I strongly believe that education system is the place to train future leaders and it is the teacher who shape our mind and change our life. Some people may not agree with me, you may complain that your teachers were tough on you. Of course, when we were under their supervision, we may not like all the works that we have to do to meet the grades but in retrospect, those tough teachers showed us what it meant to be our “very best.”\u00a0 They brought out potential that we didn’t even know we had. If teachers are easy with students then maybe they do not care. That is why “easy teachers” are never respected, and no one remember them because they don’t care enough about their students to demand excellence. They let their students “get by” with works that are so trivial and their students end up without the needed skills. That is why the education systems in some places are so bad and the future seems very bleak. It takes a lot of work to be a good teacher but all progress in history are shaped by people who demanded excellence.<\/p>\n

My question to you are: Are you doing that? Are you demand excellence? And are you expecting nothing less than excellence from others?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
