Delegation<\/p>\n

Inexperienced project managers believe that they must be in charge of everything and make every decision on the project. That is not correct. Experienced project managers succeed because they know how to delegate. Unfortunately few project management trainings even mention delegation. Delegation does not mean you lose control of the project but it is the assignment of responsibility of some tasks to another qualified person who works for you in the project.<\/p>\n

When you delegate, it is important that you clearly explain the task, how you wants it to be done as well as the expected results so that the assigned person understands what is expected. You need to define the roles and responsibilities of the assigned person so there will not be any confusion or misinterpretation of authority. For example you can say: \u201cYour job is to make sure that this task is completed on time. You can make all decisions to get it done, except on the budget, anything to do with money, you should come to me.\u201d When you delegate some tasks to other peoples, you can focus on important tasks in the project and make sure that the project will be successful.<\/p>\n

Delegation is about trust, you trust someone who can do it for you and you believe they can do it well. Many managers are afraid of giving tasks to somebody who may not meet their expectations since they are \u201cperfectionists\u201d. Some think they are the only one who can do it or are afraid of losing control. The issue is if people know that you do not trust them to do a good job on their own then they just wait for you to do all the works. As more works are coming in, you are overwhelmed, and in the end you will fail. Without delegation, many things will be stagnated since nobody would step forward to do anything, and some opportunities will be lost.<\/p>\n

Most people like to be useful and productive, they want challenge and more responsibilities and if they do not get what they want, some may leave the project. When people know that they have opportunities to learn new skills, to take on new responsibilities, they will be more motivated to do a good job. By giving them the chance, it means you trust them, you want them to learn and grow their careers, and it also means you are managers that they want to work for.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
