Engineering: Suddenly Sexy for College Grads<\/p>\n

As the financial crisis deepens, science and math grads who once flocked to Business, Finance and Banking are now considering jobs in software engineering<\/p>\n

Early in his college career, Tyler Bosmeny assumed that after graduating, he would do what hundreds of other HarvardUniversity students do: take a job on Wall Street. “I had done a summer internship in investment banking, and part of me always figured that I’d be working in finance after Harvard,” says Bosmeny, an applied mathematics major. But on graduation in June 2009, Bosmeny will work instead for an Internet company called PaperG, sells online advertising to local businesses. Only three years ago Bosmeny could have gotten an entry-level job in the financial sector with a starting salary over $100,000. Those days are over, the global market crash and the contraction of the financial sector has dramatically changed the decision for tens of thousands of promising students such as Tyler. Students who in years past would have flocked to Wall Street for Finance, Business and Banking are now considering careers in engineering and technology. Suddenly, science is sexy.<\/p>\n

Ranjitha Kurra, a student at the Business Management program at DukeUniversity, says she interned as a business analyst at Barclays Capital this summer and had an offer for a full-time job. But following Barclays’ recent acquisition of Lehman Brothers, Kurra was told she may not have a job when she graduates in December 2008. She worries that even if Barclays were to meet its commitment, she might be laid off within months. She is now looking for a job in software engineering; an area she thinks will be safer than anything in financial services or business. Sure, the tech sector could be shaky too but few expect Silicon Valley to undergo the carnage suffered by Wall Street. Another Duke student, Vinay Lekharaju, says his dream since childhood has been to become an investment banker. He believed that a solid education in the best U.S school, combined with courses in financial management, would position him well for this career. He says he has been applying to every financial service company he can, but unlike previous years, when his friends would get multiple job offers, he hasn’t even been called for an interview. So Lekharaju is looking for a job in information technology.<\/p>\n

It stands to reason that when the best Wall Street firms, such as Goldman Sachs are laid-off staff; students aren’t getting job offers and have to rethink their options. Indeed, all business sectors once considered great potential, such as regional banks, financial investment banking, and business or insurance, are busily laid-off people. Investment banking isn’t the top job anymore. Most Duke’s students are now switching their fields into Software Engineering or Information system and looking at such companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Intel and Medtronic because they are still hiring. This trend do not happen in the U.S but now spreading across Europe and eventually Asia where business and financial companies are close out shops, laid-off staff and many students in these fields will not be able to get job offer that they had hope for. In the past five years at DukeUniversity more than one-third of the management students were taking jobs in financial services. From the class of 2007, 22% went into finance. In early 2008, the percentage slid to 17%. But today during the financial crisis, nearly all business and financial students wanted to become software engineers.<\/p>\n

Over the last few years, many top students who have had innovative ideas ultimately chose to take career in investment banking or consulting, says Travis May, another Harvard undergrad who put off finishing school to re-launch his StudentBusinesses.com, an online service designed to match student-founded companies with financial funding. “Now, there is less of a pull to go in a traditional route, and the upside of that is it makes high tech startups more compelling as a career path,” May says.<\/p>\n

In an era when thousands of amateur stock analysts post their thoughts online, expert opinions from Wall Street analysts may also provide less value. On the other hand, the market need the best and brightest students developing new types of software products for medical devices, renewable energy sources, solutions for global warming, and ways for sustaining the environment and purifying water. So what Financial, Investment, Business and Banking’s loss will be software engineering’s gain.<\/p>\n
