Knowledge trends
\nAlmost every day one can find stories in the newspaper about people losing their jobs because their positions were cut due to the financial crisis or sent to a low-wage country. Students who are studying business, finance, banking and international trades are now finding themselves without a job and probably not finding jobs in the near future. Many students are switching their studies in other fields such as software engineering, medical and nursing because these jobs are still good even at this difficult time.<\/p>\n

Today people begin to understand that globalization can impact every country, every government, everybody and every field. Thomas Friedman, the author of “The world is flat” had predicted that with globalization, any job can easily be done anywhere such as in Bangalore, India or in Shanghai, China or in Paris, France because the world is already flat and fully connected via the internet. To increase profit with the globalization trend, many companies have transformed themselves into global companies to operate everywhere with skilled workers that they hire from places around the world to meet their objectives. Their executives could be in New York, their managers could be in London, their skilled workers could be in Mumbai and their factories could be in Shanghai but their products will be sold all over the world.<\/p>\n

As part of this changing world, education system will no longer be structured as local or national, as in the past, but becoming a “global education systems” to provide education and training to students from every parts of the globe. In this new system, students can predict global demands and pursue careers that help them to make comfortable living, regardless of where they live. If this theory is correct, country with the best education will have significant influence over others because it has the potential to supply skills to meet global demand according to the supply-demand theory, thus education will become an “Export Business” to supply education and training to where the demand is. This trend already happened as university opened branch campuses in other countries or licensed training programs to others.<\/p>\n

With the knowledge society, the demand and competition for skilled workers will become the main weapon in the economic warfare that could happen in the future. As in the past colonial time, countries fought to control lands, minerals and raw materials and whoever had most lands (Colonies) became the dominant power (As with Spain in the 18th century, England and France in the 19th century). With the information age, countries will compete for skilled workers for their knowledge and this trend already began with developed countries issued policies in favor of skilled workers to enter and work in their countries and eventually becoming permanent resident. In the colonial time, powerful nations with modern weapons invaded and colonized other countries for their lands, minerals, raw materials and people in their colonies are nothing but slaves until they fought for independent. However, in the knowledge age powerful nations do not invade by guns and bombs but “quietly capture” the best and the brightest workers to build their knowledge society and placed their factories into countries with archaic education where they can take advantages of lower labor skills and dump toxic wastes, manufacturing pollutions without any problems. All of this can be done under the name of \u201cProgress\u201d and \u201cModernization\u201d and the interesting fact is this exploitation has taken place for many years but very few countries would complain about it. Without proper education and awareness, many just do not know or may not care.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at some facts: At the same time lower skill jobs are being shipped overseas, the number of high skill jobs in the United States is growing rapidly and is even higher today than the best economic time. The number of software engineer, Medical doctors and Nurses is increasing five times more than the past ten years because of special immigration laws. Companies that are sending low skill jobs overseas are prospering from the lower costs of labor which is enabling them to be more profitable to grow and hiring high skill jobs in the United States and elsewhere. Many companies are opening factories in countries that do not require them to comply with environmental laws and government regulations and by skipping these “extra burden” they are much more profitable than few years ago. Unless people are aware of the globalization trend, both the advantages and the disadvantages and understand the consequences of being ignorance – things will not improve.<\/p>\n

In this changing time, education is the best things that deserve the highest attention and investment. According to the Institute for International Economics there is a strong correlation for economic prosperity and the high investment in education. Data show countries such as the U.S, England, Germany, and Japan have the best education systems and very strong economy with more wealthy people than any other countries. Newly emerging power such as India, China, and S. Korea also have strong education systems in place. After World War 2, the economy of Taiwan and S. Korea are no better than some African countries such as Ghana, Gabon or Congo but with strong education systems today Taiwan and S. Korea are very strong economic powers when other Africa countries are still not making much progress.<\/p>\n

I strongly believe that knowledge and skills are the key factors of economic development, growth, and competitiveness in the global economy. Today a country could no longer rely on its abundant natural resources and cheap labor but must create economy advantage based on combinations of technical innovations and creative knowledge. In past century, country progressed from the application of science to manufacturing techniques with mass production, where a small group of highly-skilled labor managed a much larger group of low skilled labor. In today\u2019s knowledge economy, products created by research and inventions made in laboratories are creating the knowledge-industries where technologies based on new materials, microelectronics, computer-aided design, biotechnology, advanced process control, communication devices, and other business services requires workers to have much higher skills and at least an university degrees to participate. This is because technologies are diffusing all areas, all sectors of the economy into one \u201cknowledge society\u201d that impact every aspect of our daily lives.
