To discipline students<\/p>\n

A young teacher asked me: \u201cToday some college students come to school unprepared, often misbehave and violate rules in class. I do not know how to discipline them effectively. Do you have any advice?\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Traditional approaches to discipline students are mostly negative and often result in bad feelings for everybody involved. A better solution is encouraging good behavior instead of punishing bad behavior. The traditional teacher\u2019s role is someone who has authority that demands obedience like being parents to the students. When you treat students like children, they will behave like children; and children are often misbehaved. Today, teacher\u2018s role is changing to a coach who encourages and motivates to get students to perform to their best. When a student is treated like an adult, rather than as a child, he is more likely to respond positively.<\/p>\n

To do that, it is important to set rules and make sure that students understanding and accept them. Many teachers often set rules but ignore the acceptance from students (As they are the authority) and that is why students do not like it and often violate these rules. College students are not like high school students, they should be treated as adult and they should know what is expected of them and what the consequences would be if they do not meet them.<\/p>\n

I often spend the first day of the course to discuss with students about class performance and their expectations. I also ask them to set their own rules among themselves to achieve the grade that they want. Because they are treated as adult there is a mutual respect between teachers and students about class performance resulting in the desired behavior of students. For example, when students clearly understand that they must attending class regularly, missing class without permission means a deduction of certain points that can affect their grade, and they will try not to miss class. When students clearly understand that they must turn in their homework on time, else it will not be accepted, they will try to meet the dateline.<\/p>\n

When a student misbehaves or when a problem is first identified, I would have a private meeting with the student after class. If disciplinary action is taken in front of others, the student is likely to become defensive and less open or collaborate. During the meeting, I would review the facts and state the problem in terms of desired performance and current issue to give the student a chance to explain or ask why the problem is occurring. As a coach, I listen to what the student has to say and explain the policy or rule that was violated and ask the student for possible solutions to the problem. As we discuss the changes that needed to be made and the time frame for making them, I also express confidence in the student\u2019s ability to improve so the meeting would end on a positive note. The terms of the meeting are always confidential so the student would feel comfortable and not losing face. I often follow the \u201ccorrect behavior\u201d with additional positive feedback as an encouragement and usually the problem ends there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
