For example a small company in a remote village in Africa could create a website to sell products to customers in New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, as long as they have a mean to send merchandises to customers quickly and reasonably. A software engineer with specialized skill in Poland could easily work for a company in California without have to leave Poland, since he could charge much lesser salary, because the cost of living in Poland is lower, he could compete with other engineers in the U.S. These \u201csecond wave\u201d competitors emerge from all corners of the world contribute to a new global trend toward more commoditization, making it harder than ever for any company to maintain the dominant role in the market. With the second wave of globalization, developing countries could catch up or overcome developed countries because the business rule has changed: \u201cThe big will NOT beat the small, but the fast WILL beat the slow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at some facts:\u00a0 the widespread adoption of information technology has let some developing countries outpace global powers in innovation perspectives. Time Magazine noted in early 2008 that, although there has been an annual growth of 4.7% in global patent applications, the number of patents in China, from1995 through 2005, has increased 800%. Based on this data, Time Magazine predicted that many future innovation and patents in science and technology could increasingly come from developing countries because they are more focusing in these areas and this could change the economy balance to favor them more. According to a study by HarvardUniversity, by 2025, the economies of Brazil, India and China are projected to grow to be half the sizes of the Group of Seven (G7) which include France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. Today these three countries economy only comprise less than 15% of the G7. How could they go from 15% to 50% in a very short time? HarvardUniversity concluded that the government of China, India and Brazil understand the advantage of globalization and the establishment of knowledge industry so they invest heavily in education and technology to accelerate this trend. The fact that China and India have graduated over a million engineers each year is the signal that they are planning to dominate this area. Another fact is that both China and Brazil governments are encouraging the use of solar energy and wind power to avoid dependent on oil and avoid global warming is another strongly signal that they are moving ahead when in the U.S, it is still being debated without any conclusion, whether global warming is a nature phenomenon or it is caused by human\u2019s industrialization.<\/p>\n<p>Today with proper education and direction, technology innovation is no longer the exclusive purview of companies in developed economies. The Information Age is replacing industrial focused with high technology, especially green technology processes. These new technology businesses are the growth engines that drive new opportunities in economic, productivity improvements, innovation and added value to the business. The &#8220;flatter&#8221; world already affects both developed and developing countries as the business continue to change and adjusting. Currently many developing countries have climbed onto the technology wave and are no longer merely emphasize manufacturing production. China already shifted several manufactures to other countries and focusing more on high technology such as electronics and telecommunication. Brazil is putting more efforts on biotechnology as the key economic enabler rather than the former assembly-line manufactures. However, many developing countries are still maintaining manufacturing assembly rather than switching to &#8220;high-technology&#8221; exports despite the harmful effect of industrialization and the permanent damage to their lands. The main reason is the lack of knowledge and skills to make technological changes happen because their education systems are not designed to keep up with these changes. Many countries in Africa and Central America will continue to struggle because they do not have the vision, infrastructure, management and technical skills, scientific focus education systems to solve obstacles such as poverty, crimes, and illiterate. Many could be \u201cdisconnected\u201d from the new global trend and left behind with no hope to recover as global competitive intensify.<\/p>\n<p>The globalization trend is also throwing many companies into crisis because the business environment changes faster than they can cope. Many business models are based on rigid structures that could not be applied across cultural and economic boundaries. While every company has a unique business model that contributes to its success, a global company must balance its business model with the unique culture of the new countries, new regions, or new markets. Dr. Robert Rycroft of GeorgeWashingtonUniversity predicts that in the next ten years, business models will change from technological extension to technological collaboration. The traditional extension approach driven by rigid business budget control and hierarchical organizational structures will not work in a flexible global environment.
