I told him that what we are seeing now is only the beginning of a \u201cchain of events\u201d in globalization, where things happened in one country can have significant impact on others and eventually the entire world. The financial problem in the U.S has spread throughout developed countries then the whole world. It impacts every business, large and small, millions of people are losing their jobs everyday, and it seems that this crisis will probably continue for quite sometime.<\/p>\n<p>Being a business owner, my friend already took action by reducing costs and control expenses. He already monitor revenues and expenses on a daily basis, focus on how well they are being executed and how much money they brought in. He understand companies that can reduce costs faster than their declining revenue will survive so he predicts what his customers will not be buying in the next few months and reduces inventory. As a very active manager, he does not wait for customers cancel orders because it may be too late to reduce costs. He always stays in front of the issues, not behind. However, he was not sure that he has done enough so he asked me what else he could be doing. I told him that this global crisis is the perfect time to focus on business improvement to demonstrate his leadership and adjust his business plan for the future so that he can recover in the shortest period of time when the economy improves. He told me that he has not thinking about improvement activities or future direction because he was so busy reacting to what happened on a daily basis so he asked my opinion. Being a professor not a business person, I do not think that I can advise a successful business owner, but as a friend I will try so following is my suggestion:<\/p>\n<p>The first thing he need to do is set new business direction for his company because the business model that he did few years ago may be obsolete due to the current financial crisis. In the past few years, his company had expanded into many areas successfully but by expanding too fast, he consumes a lot of capital and in this financial crisis, he needs protect his money. He needs to focus on areas that allow him to gain the most benefits during this time and anticipate the next steps when thing improves. By resetting priorities his company can improve business efficiencies and have better chance to survive over company that &#8220;Wait and See&#8221;. I also told him that in this crisis, leadership is everything so he must prepare for the next battle and the next battle will be \u201cthe battle for talent\u201d. My friend seemed surprised because he did not know what I mean by \u201ctalent\u201d. Of course, it is difficult to define \u201ctalent\u201d but the simplest definition is the one that have knowledge, skills and experiences in a specialized area with a passion to make thing happen. These are people that the famous writer Peter Drucker called the \u201cKnowledge workers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As a researcher, I have conducted several studies on the global trends and knew that there was a critical shortage of highly skilled people all over the world. Without talented people to fill top jobs, the hunt for talent has gone global and over the past ten years, many companies have shipped works and IT operations to the developing world, particularly India and China. More recently they have started moving higher level jobs offshore as well, focus on talented workers with special knowledge however, many developing countries begin to have talent shortages of their own too. Today, university does not produce enough talents for the industry. Many students are trained in \u201cAcademic\u201d theories without any skills that industry needs resulting in many students could not find jobs where there are so many opportunities without people to fill.\u00a0 The shortage of talent will continue as long as university does not change and the hunt for talent will continue with skilled people get several job offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor that contributes to the shortage is the ageing of the population. This will be very severe in Europe and Japan because in the next ten years, the number of people aged 15-64 is projected to fall by 7% in Germany, 9% in Italy and 14% in Japan. In America, the retirement of the baby-boomers (born between 1946 -1964) means that many companies will lose large numbers of experienced workers in the next five years. The latest study by the AARP, a retirement group found that most companies will lose half their senior managers in the next five years and the U.S government will lose over 65% of top jobs in the next seven years. This means that every country, every company and everyone will have to fight harder for talent to fill their highly skilled positions.<\/p>\n<p>I believe the battle for talent will be at its fiercest within companies in high-tech industries when the economy improves. To anticipate this, I told my friend that he must act differently from others, when they laid-off people, he must use this opportunity to recruit top talents from those companies and this is a strategic move because when things improve, many companies will have to hire people and they may have to hire below-average people \u201cjust to fill a position quickly\u201d and lacking talent will not help them in a highly competitive market. The new direction for his business will be \u201cattracting and retaining\u201d talent because in the knowledge society, the best asset is talent, not capital because it is people that create wealth not the other way. As a successful business owner, he must hire the best and the brightest from top universities, he should create a system of evaluation to promote them into important positions and let them innovate and create wealth for him. Of course, he will need good management to manage these talents so he also needs to invest in new management training. Among other things, he must stretch strong ethical codes and higher goals than just making money because greed can create problem and bring down a good business.
