Knowledge Society: The Flat World<\/p>\n

Few days ago, I found an interesting article about information technology in Nairobi, Kenya as follows: \u201cIn the country side parts of Kenya, students looking for jobs advertised online have to travel long distances to the nearest town with an Internet cafe. That changed last year with the creation of One-World International, a Kenyan firm offering a mobile phone text messaging service that advertises jobs and allows candidates to apply from wherever they are.\u00a0 “It’s relatively easy. All you need is access to a mobile phone” said Anthony Mwaniki, One-World International’s business manager. Within few months, hundred thousand people began to apply for jobs via this site and making One-Word International a very successful business and the fastest growing Kenya Company in 2008\u201d.<\/p>\n

Text messaging is not new, it has become a very popular among young people, especially in Asia, but I did not know that it is also popular in Africa. I asked an African friend and he confirmed: \u201cYes, information technology is the big thing now, especially computer and software engineering because it is the greatest hope for poor African to have better jobs, better careers, and especially the opportunities to work in offices rather than in the fields.\u201d He told me that despite what people saw on TV about wars, diseases, hungers and poverty, life goes on. People must live and education is the greatest hope for every African to be independent, to be self sufficient, and to move up from poverty to a better living. Today thousand of Africans, from every country and every place are gathering in classes to learn computer, programming and software engineering. They start very early and stay up late because with unemployment rate over 50% and with civil wars breakout in many places, the only hope is to study for better future. With the internet, many can work for European companies from their villages, mostly do basic things like testing and programming but it is still hundred times better than work in the fields. With the low cost of living, a few dollars can help their families live comfortably better than others. He concluded: To many African, globalization works, \u201cFlat Word\u201d is wonderful.<\/p>\n

I spent the next day to do some investigations and found that 85% of South Korea household has broadband connection (The U.S only has 63%) and according to a report by the World Economic Forum in 2008, the U.S is no longer on the top but Denmark, Sweden and S. Korea occupied the top three positions as \u201ctechnological most advanced country\u201d. The ranking system is based on the integration of technology in business, infrastructure and innovation. Another interesting fact in China, companies do not advertise jobs on newspapers but go direct to websites. A Chinese friend told me: \u201cNewspaper classifieds is dead; no body read it anymore because it is too late. If you want to post something, it took days to get it on the newspaper but if you put it on the internet, you get responses quickly. The internet has become a huge market for selling and buying everything because people do not need stores anymore. Without money invest in a store, they can sell things cheaper via their own websites and since most Chinese love bargains, websites that selling things are big business now. Some websites have both Chinese and English so they also sell things all over the world. People do not need to travel to China to buy things anymore. They can stay home, save airfare money, use keyboards to select whatever they want and click \u201cBuy\u201d. Within a few days, they can receive the merchandises at home. That is the power of the e-business. The potential of having a huge market to sell things globally is evolving throughout China with all kind of things, from cellular phones, TV, electronics to toys, shoes, and clothes. Today companies do not advertise in paper newspaper anymore because only old people read them and most of them do not buy anything. I think within a few years, paper newspapers and magazines will be gone, replacing by on-line newspaper which is faster, better, more up-to-date informations and everything will happen in the \u201cVirtual world\u201d. He also concluded: To many Chinese, information technology is good, internet is wonderful.<\/p>\n

So the world is really moving at Internet speed. Many countries are already moving ahead with information technology such as mobile phones, Internet, broadband, technology, digital TV. These will change the way people work and could make the country more effective and productive. The results could be more people find work faster, more people support the business by building websites, building applications, programming software that gather information for market analysis, more people work for companies in the other part of the world, more people selling and buying things via the internet and with many people working, the economy begins to grow and expands. As more people have money to buy things, more products and services are produced and the economy continues to grow. Growing economy puts more people to work and this cycle will continue. When the economy expands, there will be a time when the balance of power shifts from employers to employees. This is the time when the question changes from “How can I get a job?” to “How can we find enough skilled workers?”\u00a0 With so many things moving into the internet, do business in the internet, reading things on-line, more people with information technology skill are needed and the shortage of skilled workers will begin. I believe that time have come, especially to people with computer skills, despite the global crisis. The U.S Labor Statistic predicts a shortage of 1 million computing people in 2010 despite the fact that China and India are producing over one million software people per year.<\/p>\n

In this global financial crisis, many companies will stop spending money, laying off people, and looking for better ways to reduce costs. In the beginning when companies put people on the unemployment list, everybody panics and businesses will \u201cFreeze\u201d or wait to see what happens next.\u00a0 However business must goes on, companies must operate to keep the revenue rolling and they have to find better ways to reduce costs. One solution is to outsource more to keep their cost lower to survive this slow and narrow market. This will create better opportunities for outsourcing companies, especially if their costs are competitive. Instead of wait for better opportunity or a better time, this is the opportunity for good company to develop strategy to grasp the best talent. In this crisis, instead of thinking about reducing people, company should retain their skilled people or else competitor could hire them away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
