To discipline students part 2<\/p>\n

After reading my blog \u201cTo discipline students\u201d, a young teacher wrote to me: \u201cYou wrote that on the first day of the course, you allow students to set rules for the class as you want to treat them as adult. How do you do that? Please share your technique. I am curious. Thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: It is a simple way to motivate and let students set their own rules. On the first day of the course, I write on the blackboard: “The best class I have ever had” and underneath it “What the teacher did” and below that “What the students did.” On another side of the blackboard I wrote “The worst class I have ever had” and then the same two items beneath.<\/p>\n

I ask students to share their experiences, without naming the course or the teacher. I begin to write what they like and do not like based on what students share in class. If there are not enough details about what the students did in these classes, I add some descriptors based on my own experience with some of my best and worst classes. In about twenty minutes, the students could see two very different types of class emerge. I point to the best class section of the board and tell students that this is the type of class that I want to teach, but I cannot do it alone. I will try to fulfill my part in the \u201cWhat the teacher did.\u201d If the students are willing to fulfill their part of \u201cwhat the students did.\u201d then we have a commitment to make learning happens.\u00a0 Since these are their opinions and their views, they all feel that they are setting the rules for themselves.<\/p>\n

I always encourage them by saying: \u201cI will try my best to do my part if you also follow \u201cyour own rules\u201d and we can make this class one of those “best class” experiences that you ever have. Because students are treated as adult there is a mutual respect between teachers and students about class performance which often resulting in the desired behavior of students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
